Arsenal's Record In Europe

Arsenal are a great club that have had some great players over the years. Highbury was a class stadium as well, but their european record is very underwhelming.

Arsenal have never won the Champions League nor the Europa League. They've been in something like seven european finals and have only won the two of them.

Arsenals most recent european trophy was the Cup Winners Cup thirty years ago. That and a Fairs Cup in 1970 is all they have won in europe.

It's more european trophies than what we have, but Arsenal have been to europe more often than Everton as well.

Even Spurs have more european trophies than them!lol Great club but the lack of european trophies on the sideboard does stand out for me.

Where does domestic outweigh European? The differing nature of competition from knockout to league has been a factor because one bad night at the office could fix you for the season back then.

In terms of domestic record Arsenal are very respectable. It's just that their european record is not that great.

They only had one Champions League final apperance in 2006 and a semi final in 2009 under Wenger for example.

I think they used to keep crashing out in the last sixteen for a few years running as well.

Wenger had a little problem of getting his ancillary stars pinched, think Overmars and Anelka, he could integrate new talents but was never afforded enough buffer to go all the way with Europe. Petit got picked off as well. The biggest sides could never quite get Vieira and Henry and Bergkamp but they could get the best of the rest and so he could never quite keep hold of the quality long enough.
It might be a slightly romantic view, but his sides were very capable on their day and to push others as far as they did is testament to a manager with an eye for genuine quality.

Arsenal were a superb team under Wenger. An unbeaten league season as well and consistent top four finishes, when they were trying to keep the finances in order after moving to the Emirates.

They did lose the Uefa Cup final to Galatasary on penalties, and from what i can recall from watching that 2006 Champions League final Henry missed a lot of chances that night.

It's a bit weird to be making an enemy of a club we are a million miles off.
I said Arsenal are a great club, but they probably should have more european trophies to show for the amount of times they've been there.

But yes Everton and Arsenal are poles apart right now sadly. We both used to be pretty equal enough in terms of stature and trophies in the 90's.

Well done lid, you're the future of our football club and we'd be lost without you.

Thank you for your very insightful contributions to this thread. You quite clearly are a very astute footballing person.

I suggest you actually read a thread before commenting on it. That would be of benefit to both you and myself as well.;)

Oh well another one for my ignore list!

Always wondered why some clubs seem to adapt to European competition better than others.

Juventus have 36 Scudettos compared to Milan's 19. Almost double. Yet Milan have been European champions 7 times and Juventus only twice.
Milan have the same amount of victories in Champions League finals as Juventus have defeats.

Milan with seven victories and seven defeats in finals for Juventus.

Juve dwarf Milan with regards to domestic honours. Milan last won the Copa Italia in 2003 as well.

2003/04 maybe should go down as a missed opportunity for them. That was their invincible season. Lost to an inferior Chelsea side in the CL QF. If they'd gone through it would've been Monaco in the semis then Porto in the final. Both very good sides but equally not a daunting draw, considering how good that Arsenal team was

Arsenal are perennially the most consistent side in English History.

Everton have just equalled - in the last 3 seasons alone - the amount of bottom half finishes Arsenal have had in the last 60 years.

They've always been there or there abouts when it comes to winning trophies.

But despite that; especially in modern history (15 years); they've just flattered to deceive. Certainly with their more "modern" fanbase (which I loathe; would genuinely rather sit down and listen to Anfield Wrap spluge about Klopp than I would with these wannabe over the top modern arsenal fans); there's an expectancy that they will beat certain teams, the likes of Porto, Sporting, Villarreal... but they're so dimensional, that often when you've sat in deep against them and have that counter attacking quality, they can't handle it.

It's been the case since Wenger left too.

I remember that Arsenal Vs Barca 2006 final was the first European final I watched live. Lehmann getting sent off early cost them. Even after the red the played well and could have scored more than one. With 11 they would have won easily.

Mentally has a huge role to play in these comps, Arsenal always saw these matches as extra games and challenging where successful European sides embrace them as games to create history part of their legacy.

Look at Liverpool every time they are a few goals behind in the 1st leg, they truly believe they will create history in the 2nd and come back. Where Arsenal would fear conceding more goals.

I do see them getting to a final with Arteta but probably lose it
