Arsenal's Record In Europe

Always regarded Arsenal as London's version of a gritty Northern club unlike their close neighbours who are the Southern media darlings but who are perennial bottlers when the going gets tough. Accepted they have won domestic and European trophies...and even a double in their distant past...but 'celebrity' seems to have overtaken them in more recent times as they they have failed to stay the course on many occasions when they ought to have done better.

Where does domestic outweigh European? The differing nature of competition from knockout to league has been a factor because one bad night at the office could fix you for the season back then.
Exactly this. Some years back, for me the order of gravitas was: Div 1 title, FA Cup, European Cup, Cup Winners Cup, UEFA Cup, league Cup.

Since European cups have been changed to endless leagues for TV, reducing the jeopardy of knock out, even using the uefa competition as a safety net, they have no gravitas or interest to me whatsoever. What's worse, the money in the competition always goes to the same old teams that qualify, as they can get the pick of players .... and those teams are those that just happened to be in the right spot in the years around the re-jig. The money has caused stratification and stagnation in my view and I detest European football now, for what it's done.

And the Europe league? I hope we never qualify for that. If a league has ever been designed to stretch a promising team the following season and stop it challenging the sky brands, this is it. Utterly worthless, runners up to the runners up to the runners up league.

Arsenal are a great club that have had some great players over the years. Highbury was a class stadium as well, but their european record is very underwhelming.

Arsenal have never won the Champions League nor the Europa League. They've been in something like seven european finals and have only won the two of them.

Arsenals most recent european trophy was the Cup Winners Cup thirty years ago. That and a Fairs Cup in 1970 is all they have won in europe.

It's more european trophies than what we have, but Arsenal have been to europe more often than Everton as well.

Even Spurs have more european trophies than them!lol Great club but the lack of european trophies on the sideboard does stand out for me.

I'm pretty sure the Fairs Cup later became the UEFA Cup, which in turn obviously became the Europa League. So in that sense they've won 2 of the 3 European competitions on offer (suppose it's 4 now with the Conference nonsense), but just not the big one.

Yeah the Fairs Cup can be considered the Europa League i think.

We should have taken the Geordies place in it the season they won it!

The rules at the time though stated that only one team per city could qualify and the rs qualified first by finishing ahead of us in the league.

I said Arsenal are a great club, but they probably should have more european trophies to show for the amount of times they've been there.

But yes Everton and Arsenal are poles apart right now sadly. We both used to be pretty equal enough in terms of stature and trophies in the 90's.
Didn't some ex spurs player Nayim score a winner from halfway? Maybe in a final? Not sure.

I remember that Arsenal Vs Barca 2006 final was the first European final I watched live. Lehmann getting sent off early cost them. Even after the red the played well and could have scored more than one. With 11 they would have won easily.

Mentally has a huge role to play in these comps, Arsenal always saw these matches as extra games and challenging where successful European sides embrace them as games to create history part of their legacy.

Look at Liverpool every time they are a few goals behind in the 1st leg, they truly believe they will create history in the 2nd and come back. Where Arsenal would fear conceding more goals.

I do see them getting to a final with Arteta but probably lose it
I thought they might hold them off until Larrson came on
