Royal Blue Jersey

Player Valuation: £35m
I've never tried to be too over-zealous when considering our players as international "quality" although that's a misleading statement. Darren Bent is international quality, but Peter Crouch isn't. Yet, guess which one is in the england team?
I've considered, for about a year now, a certain player's prospects and after a bit of a mild first half (by his standards), he got up and turned the heat on Blackburn in the second. He was oustanding, and in my opinion, there's still more to come. He can get better. I'm talking, of course, about Mikel Arteta.

So, why isn't he there? People talk about difficult competition in similar areas, but I find that argument grows weaker by the day. Xavi, Luis Garcia, Albelda, Angulo, Iniesta...I'd fancy Arteta over them most days, and on his good day he's better than Alonso. I can't make sense of it, because if they're giving chances to the likes of Marcos Senna and Juanito, it should be a relative formality for Arteta to break in. I think him and Fabregas would be a great midfield pairing. Let's remember, Arteta will surely step up his game (buoyed confidence e.t.c) should he make the international team, and as I said earlier, he can get better. Garcia in particular is a funny one; Liverpool connections all over again. Arteta has got pace, defending and hard work (especially by a Spanish midfielder's standards), trickery, great passing ability, and this season he's even adding goals to his array of skills. That sealed it for me, in a way. His goals against Bolton, Wigan, Sheffield United, quality. Bolton was just sheer brilliance.
I just hope Spain don't deny him his chance any longer because he deserves not only a call up, but a definate first team place. I think some of us blues think he plays for everton, he can't be good enough. I know certainly thats what the men in power think and it's probably why he hasn't been picked.
Believe it people. He really is good enough.

So far it could be a blessing in disguise, although he occasionally makes the noises about international football and wanting europen exposure.

(is guti spanish?)

there is no doubt he has the ability, and is fairly consistant considering he isnt in a side laced with international quality throughout. that might be part of it though, like gravesen before him, when i speak to other fans (none-everton-fans) i occasionally hear that he is a decent player standing out in an ordinary side. i dont particularly believe that by the way.

The problem with the team as i see it and have seen it for sometime is 'time', we have long needed a player capable of making good passes from the middle allowing players on either flank to break quickly and advance. slow gradual play is sometimes necessary, but being stuck in one gear (slow) means opposition sides get the measure of you and thats when we see hoof ball and panicky midfield displays where possession is often lost.

the player in the middle is in some regards the fulcrum of a good side, he has to be available to receive the simple pass from defence then distribute and move into space. Paul Scholes has long been the master of passing and pushing attacks on (admittedly a lot easier job with quality like giggs and ronaldo to work with).

when arteta first arrived he was played in the middle, but suffered from gravesen syndrome, in that he tried to do too much, this was due to the fact that there wasnt sufficient quality around him to allow him just to do his job.

does a midfield 4 of

VDM fernandes neville arteta

look any good? i reckon so, vdm being the weakest link in that little set.

maybe a 3-5-2 could be employed

..........yobo stubbs lescott
..neville.........................valente
..........arteta fernandes osman
....................cahill
..................johnson

that requires a lot from either fullback, and stubbs pace becomes an issue when the opposition turns possession over and breaks fast.

Anyway, back to Arteta, if we want to see the absolute best from him we need to give him equally good midfielders to work with. Its no coincidence that when arteta plays average, or is marked/kicked out of a game that we then struggle.

he has it all to become an everton great, he simply needs the opportunity to make that step up, its down to the board and the correct signings by moyes.

Another great analysis RBJ and SB.

I cant see Arteta leaving just yet, but you never know, Im not sure if hes good enough for someone like United (playing week in, week out that is).

Hopefully he will get a call up soon and that will re-assure him that Everton is the place to be.

Their main midfield would probably be
Ronaldo, Scholes, Carrick, Giggs

which is pretty strong, especially the wingers - both fantastic players, Carrick is coming on, Scholes has vast experience. With work I think he'd break in, no doubt. He'd certainly be top of the subs at least, he's a far cry from John O'Shea and Darren Fletcher isn't he?

the only risk is if Mikky gets a call up, hpw many clubs will come in for him?
may i remind you of rooney, ball, jeffears, judas barmby...

from satis

Evertonian’s will be worried to hear that Mikel Arteta has apparently told the Spanish press, that it would be a “dream” of his to play for Spanish team Atletico Madrid.

Atletico have shown an interest in Everton’s most gifted football player before but David Moyes was quick to rebuff interest shown in Arteta earlier on in the season.

However if Everton fail to match the ambitions of our better players it will be difficult to keep such talented players as Arteta, who no doubt wants to play European football on a consistent basis and be challenging for honours, making that sixth spot in the Premiership all the more important and making long term investment in the club all the more necessary if we wish to keep our best players and attract more good players to the club.

Arteta said:

"To play with Atletico Madrid has been my dream for several years," he told AS.

i hope its a fabrication, i dont know if 'AS' is a gutter rag like the sun or the star, maybe he will clear this up when he gets back from NY.

Or we could go for the complete consipracy theory slant and say the media is trying to unsettle him so a decent Everton player leaves us, further casting us in the shites shadow.

Arteta is a class player but it won't be the end of the world if he goes. What we need to do is ensure that we get mucho euro for him:P :P :P
