Ashley Williams believes Everton’s defensive problems can quickly be solved under Ronald Koeman - as he eyes his Blues debut at West Brom this weekend.

The new signing admits he is playing “catch-up” after a late return to pre-season but says Koeman’s killer training sessions mean he will be ready for Saturday.

Williams sealed a £12m move from Swansea City last week but was left out of the squad for the opening game of the season against Spurs.

The 31-year-old watched from the stands as Everton took an early lead at Goodison but were pegged back in the second-half.

Williams was impressed with the performance, describing the back three as “magnificent” and doesn’t believe major surgery is required on the Blues leaky backline.

Everton shipped 105 league goals in the last two seasons and, after losing John Stones, Koeman has brought in Williams and is also targeting Sunderland’s Lamine Kone.

And Williams, who is comfortable playing in a back three, does not believe it will be a big task to tighten up the Blues’ defence.

“I don’t think so,” he told the ECHO.

“We’ve got quality players and you saw that on Saturday, I thought the back three were magnificent. They conceded one, which can happen, but I thought all three of them did well.

“They’re top notch players, even Mason (Holgate) you can see how good he is, and the other two have played a lot of games in the Premier League.

“The gaffer will try and organise it a little bit different to possibly last year, I’ll try and fit in within that and do my job and try and tighten it up as much as I can.”

Ahead of the game with Spurs, Koeman said his squad were only 70% fit and that there were having to cope with more gruelling training sessions than they are used to.

“There are! I can confirm that,” Williams says with a laugh.

“They are a little bit different to what I’m used to. The boys are bang on it and everyone is trying to impress in training as they should be.

“It’s good, I’m happy with the training sessions and hopefully they make me a better player. The sessions demand you to work hard.”

“You’re going home tired,” he added.

“Especially for me because I’ve not done a full pre-season so I’m playing a little bit of catch-up. We’re tired after the training sessions, definitely.”

Williams is hoping to start a new chapter in his career this weekend after leaving a club where he had built iconic status.

The Wales captain admits leaving Swansea after eight years was tough but knew when Everton came calling it was too good an opportunity to turn down.

“It was really difficult,” Williams said.

“It’s hurts, really, at the time leaving.

“There are so many good people there, I’d been there eight years, my kids have grown up there, gone to school there and so Swansea is a massive part of my life.

Ashley Williams loved his time at Swansea and it was a wrench to leave
“So it was difficult saying bye to everyone but I felt, at this stage of my career, it was something I needed, a bit of new scenery, a bit of a new challenge and that’s nothing against Swansea.

“That was the decision really. I just felt like for me to get the best out of myself I needed to come out of what I know and what’s comfortable to me and step away and try and challenge myself.”

“I thought about it for three or four days and I had to get back to the chairman and everybody else,” he added.

“I thought about it, it’s an unbelievable club with a great manager, an unbelievable set of players, fans, it all seemed positive so I thought ‘why not?’.

“And this is what I need at this stage in my career.”

Looks like we have been after him for 6 weeks or so, according to the latest BBC article.

Everton recently completed a deal to sign Ashley Williams from Swansea City. The Wales international completed a deal reported by the BBC to be worth £12 million.

The move has certainly pleased plenty of Everton fans, with the club crying out for a new central-defender after the sale of John Stones to Manchester City.

It has also pleased the defender’s father.

Errol Williams is happy that Williams has made the move and revealed what Bill Kenwright said to the Welsh talisman. He told the Tamworth Herald:

"Ash is feeling very good. Ronald Koeman wanted him as did the club and they made that clear to him.

"The chairman was really good, he told Ash he had seen him at Stockport and he was the first player David Moyes and Roberto Martinez wanted and now he has finally succeeded third-time lucky with Koeman.

"Obviously it is nice for him to feel wanted. He has come from non-league and done almost everything he wanted. He has played in the Premier League, the Euro's, won a cup, been to Wembley twice.

"The only thing left for him is to play in the Champions League and, who knows, he could do that now."

It would therefore appear that Williams has been a target for Everton for some time now.

Swansea have always managed to keep hold of their captain down the years but Williams obviously felt now was the right time to make a move to Goodison Park.

Everton are certainly excited about the future currently. The club are spending big and Ronald Koeman is an exciting appointment from the club after the departure of Roberto Martinez at the end of last season.

Koeman is obviously hopeful that Williams can bring stability and class to his defence after Everton leaked goals throughout 2016-17.

Read an article before and it appears kenwright has been lying as per usual (if true)

Apparently he said to Ashley Williams that he was the first player moyes wanted to sign. Moyes joined us in 2002 whilst Williams will have been at Hednesford.. So I don't believe for once second he was the first player he wanted (if true surely he would have come to Everton rather than Stockport in 2003)

And apparently Martinez wanted him as his first signing too whilst he was at Swansea. That I can believe but I just can't help but laugh at the bull billy comes out with
