Australian football (not Aussie rules)

Does anyone watch it? It’s crap.

When Matt Derbyshire is the top goalscorer in the league, you know it’s a poor league.

He was handy on his day, but he’s what 34-35 now and he’s the leading scorer, says everything you need to know.

For a British footballer though, great opportunity to get paid, have some sunshine and probably enjoy the level which it’s at. I know there’s a few scouse lads out there.

But after trying hard to get some household names like Del Piero, they’ve just resigned themselves to a poor league really.

Not every league is going to be good. Look at the irish and welsh leagues. Youd think they would be at a higher level being in such close proximity to england. But football in these countrys arent the priority sport

It's a pretty poor standard, but when you consider the overwhelming majority of young lads play AFL in one half of the country, and rugby league in the other half, it's no surprise.

That being said, in the 20 years I've lived here the standard has improved dramatically. It's not just the migrant kids playing it now, more and more Aussie parents are getting their little uns into 'soccer' as there's a perception that it's less dangerous than the other codes.

The A league is gash though.

Work with tons of Australians. None of them like football, none of them have ever watched football and few are even aware that they actually have a footballing league

I watch the A-League and i like it myself, but then again i watch any football pretty much most leagues, even weird one's that no one hardly ever hears about ever lol - as ever with most leagues there can be good and the very bad games

It may be terrible but it’s still better than Aussie rules, seriously how is that sport even a thing. How does one manage to design a sport where scoring looks so underwhelming ?

This A league goal is more entertaining that the entire history and existence of Aussie rules

Completely disagree. I think afl is a very underrated sport. Im sure there's plenty of australians, who would disagree with you as well! The A league has a long way to go, before it can rival the afl and nrl in the popularity stakes down under.

Fair enough, I just think its such an ugly sport to watch, so scrappy and messy, makes lower league football look incredibly skilffull

These are the best goals ever and im just sat here thinking how absolutely underwhelming they all are to watch.

Watch the whole of the 1970 vfl grand final on youtube, and then come back to me. If that game isn't enough to get you into the sport, then nothing will. I have an afl thread over on the alehouse, for further discussion on this topic!

Have a look at the best AFL marks ever on YouTube (where multiple players go up for a high ball). Much more exciting than when they kick a goal. It's a great sport, especially at a live game. No segregation between fans so a cracking atmosphere with very little trouble. It took me a fair few years to get into it but I love it now. Still don't know half the rules like.
