Who do you support in it?Really big on Aussie Rules footy. I think it would really take off here in the States if they had more coverage. Great sport.
Oh, ACTUAL footy in Australia? Crap.

Nobody really, whenever I can get a match recorded here I try to watch it tho. I was in Sydney when that / Russel Crowe's club won the whole thing. Was a fun time. It's a really good sport and really straightforward for the most part. I explained it to my wife whilst watching in about 5 minutes and she basically got it which is amazing. Trying to explain how a sport is meant to be played in minutes is a huge draw. Hell, I STILL don't get parts about footy. I had played my entire youth and never knew the offside rule was even more complex than just a simple "last man".Who do you support in it?
Tbf, I watched it some in the late eighties early nineties and then again more recently and its not the same game. Love how your thread not about aussie rules is about aussie rules haha.Watch the whole of the 1970 vfl grand final on youtube, and then come back to me. If that game isn't enough to get you into the sport, then nothing will. I have an afl thread over on the alehouse, for further discussion on this topic!
I just tell them if I wanted to watch a "man's sport", I would watch rugby. Seems to upset them even more.Try to argue with an Aussie Rules fan than Football is better and they'll destroy you in 10 seconds with how embarrassing the play acting 'fouls' are.
Aussie Rules players are actual machines compared to the highly pampered.
Can't get past their previous association with Steve 'eff off' McMahon personally. The standard is not very good, but that is to be expected in a country where it is only the 4th or 5th most popular sport.
The league has a ridiculously low salary cap therefore they are not going to keep any good talents as even the minor leagues in Europe can pay more.
They are in a catch 22 though, they can't keep their better players until they get a bigger media deal to pay them, and they won't get a bigger tv deal until the standard improves.
Oh, and Perth Glory are the best.
Yeah, wasn't happy when joined us. Or Robbie Fowler. Can't get past their previous association with Steve 'eff off' McMahon personally.
I go to a couple of Melbourne Victory games easy season with some mates who rabidly support them, but I can't get excited about any A league club.
Slightly off topic but it bugs me how many Aussie football fans have a different team in each country/competition. Got one melt here who claims to be a massive RS fan but he also 'supports' Celtic, Melbourne Victory, Juventus and (bizarrely) Partick Thistle. The massive beaut.
Yeah NSL was good, Glory were a great team back then. Morwell Falcons currently play in the same Sunday league as the local team I'm involved with, it's great playing away games at their massive NSL stadium. It's really grubby these days but nice to think we're playing on the same pitch where Danny Tiatto, Mark Viduka and Archie Thompson all started out.Yeah, wasn't happy when joined us. Or Robbie Fowler.
I actually preferred it in the NSL days, A league is trying too hard to put on a show like the EPL or champions league, but with nowhere near the quality of product. It's all a bit contribed for me. Just let the players walk out, let the crowd cheer then begin the game
They were, and getting 20,000 every week too. It was the hottest ticket in town for a few years until the A league came and sanitised it all. I went to some cracking games against Melbourne knights, we absolutely hated them and at least 3 times we came from behind to win 4-3 with a last minute winner.Yeah NSL was good, Glory were a great team back then. Nah Melbourne City all the way.The standard is not very good, but that is to be expected in a country where it is only the 4th or 5th most popular sport.
