So wow, down for a few days. I was somewhat incredulous that bandwidth would be an issue is this day and age. I was able to find out that GOT is hosted at FrozenWeb and shocked to learn that for $12US you only get 5GB of bandwidth. I myself pay less than $10US and get 3TB with midPhase. While we can explore ways to conserve bandwidth it is ultimately counter-productive to growing a community website so I would begin exploring alternate hosting providers.

I understood about 10 words in that, you seem to know what you are talking about- PM Danny and get it sorted dude!

5gb is a piddling amount but I guess it's UK hosting rather than US hosting. One thing I will mention is that some US hosts advertise bandwidth levels that are outside the realms of reality and as soon as your site gets any kind of traffic they take you down due to CPU overuse or too many db connections etc.

True of the less reputable vendors but so far I haven't bumped into that. I will admit that I have not run a forum site so I have been down the db connection road to the extend that a site like this requires.

I will check midPhase and see if they have vBulliten support and if not I'll find a reputable ISP that does.

Bloody hell, I get 60GB on a throwaway reseller account that I just picked up for US-targeted sites. Stick it on a decent server with decent bandwidth and it should cost less than 20 bucks a month - Pair is just under that and they seem pretty solid.

ok does bandwidth mean everything eg every post, every picture, every shoutbox message, every saved pm in short everything

because if it does we might have to disable some things me thinks and is it possible to put a time limit on posts so they dont stay here for ever.

im thinking can we say do something that will make the post disapper after say a month so it dont take up bandwidth after everyone has either read it or decided not to read it

Two different things, ever tony an, although the amount of stuff stored does have an indirect effect on the bandwidth.

Storage space means all the stuff which is on the server (GOT computer) and how much space it needs and has.

Bandwidth is when it gets sent to you or you send stuff to the site. The amount of that is measured by some hosting companies and they sometimes charge excesses for more usage than expected. (Although if you have a decent company they will work with you if you get an unexpected spike in visitors.)

At the moment you are reading a post which has been stored on the site, but which has been sent to your computer. So it is using storage and bandwidth.

We get a bit of a better deal mate. The package isn't the best but I always intended to increase bandwidth, was just cut short last month, it isn't really an issue. I went with Frozen because of reliability. Whenever I need help, hes at hand (excluding the last bandwidth issue which he didnt increase) and he constantly makes backups etc. Also, with him being in the business for years its trustworthy, a lot of these 'companies' can suddenly vanish as am sure you know.

Sounds a good deal with 'midPhase' how long have they been going? cpanel? mySQL? etc as standard? Would they move the account to their server?

I've been with midPhase for a couple of years now. They're the real deal with Tier 1 level connectivity and a big staff with 24/7 support and emergency power from the Sears Tower in Chicago. Christ, they're a DNS registrar even. CPanel, fantastico, SSH you name it. I do pay for the extra developers ($40US /yr) package to get unlimited DB's instances (obviously limited by size but at least I can load just about any app from fantastico and know I can create a new instance) plus SSH access. They're one of the few that offer IMAP support for mail as well. My buddy who is an ex-pat from silicon value and worked in the industry for years was sufficiently impressed to dump his ISP and move to midPhase.

They will do the DB and file moves, DNS and the whole shebang. They'll even buy out your old contract.

Good question. I think there is a referral thing. Not a big deal but tell them hartbeatensemble.org sent you (that's a theater company I do side work for).

Also look for the 'secret link'!
