Beer, revisited

I use to quite like Kronenbourg Blanc before they stopped selling it.

Yet, you're more likely to get Amstel or Grolsch in the Netherlands, which tells me an awful lot.
When I was in Haarlem recently they had some great bottled beers. They were quite pricey.
Maybe that's why you don't see Dutch folk staggering about drunk on a weekend.
I certainly never saw any.

Been sampling some of these US style IPA beers brewed in this country........quite like one called "Life or Death" by the Vocation brewery at Hebden Bridge. Packs a punch at 6.5 ABV, but is very drinkable with a good malty bitterness.....will be investigating further.

I suspect it's a cultural thing, which is show by the fact they drink glasses that are normally only 220-250ml and some of that is the huge head: it's more quaint.

We use to visit Amsterdam and Utrecht quite a lot for Koningsdag (King's Day) when they all get trollied all day in a major street party. It's well worth a visit.

Even then, they regularly commented on how much we could and would put away in a day / evening / weekend compared to your average Dutch person.

I remember sitting in Louis Bar (just off Dam Square), which was one of our usual haunts, and we each sank well over twenty beers* sat at the bar - a good sesh.

Anyway, we moved on in the early evening for some food and then copious amounts more of ale. Next morning, we were in there by about midday after food.

"Where did you go after that?" he declared with a smile on his face. "Errr, for a Chinese and then went drinking again." The shock on their faces were a picture.

They'd had three shift changes and we just kept on drinking throughout, so they suspect we'd have stopped. We probably did about eighteen pints that day.

Now, I am not saying we regularly drink eighteen pints (far from it), but a good day sesh can easily be ten or more, but for them even that was just beyond belief.

*worked out about 10-12 pints
