Big day on the ale yesterday folks. As part of the Bristol food connections week, this weekend held the inaugural East Bristol Brewery Trail, with 5 local breweries opening up their doors to the public including Dawkins Ales who I've been working for off and on over the last year.

In fact the new brewery in Lawrence Hill was our first stop:

This isn't fully armed and operational yet, all Dawkins Ales are still brewed at Timsbury about 12 miles outside the city. But there is fully functioning bar!

We had a couple of pints of the outstanding new Sorachi Ace, best beer Dave has brewed yet I think, and he's a multi award winning brewer.

The man himself, founder and MD (and all round good egg) Glen Dawkins:

Boss pictures.

Round the corner is the new kid, Good Chemistry, who as the name suggests take a scientific approach to brewing. Behind this unassuming shutter:

... lies a very well spec'ed new brewery:

And a makeshift bar:

Now I was really looking forward to trying their beers when they launched, but the first bottle I had a few weeks ago was very underwhelming, and apparently the much anticipated Quercus Alba bombed at the Bristol Beer Festival. However the guys at GC took the criticism constructively and the new batch of QA we necked yesterday was superb, a rich malty ale with a passion fruit hit, great beer. However the porter we tried was a bit watery so it looks like they've still got some experimentation to do, I'm sure they'll get it right.

With a DJ playing funk and soul and lots of battered couches knockin about this place was a lot of fun.

Unfortunately word got round that Left Handed Giant had shut down at about half six, an hour and a half ahead of time and apparently not because they'd run out of beer. Given that they've already got a bit of a reputation for arrogance they really haven't done themselves any favours. Shame really as they make some excellent ales and are about halfway between Good Chemistry and our last stop, the ever reliable Arbor Ales:

These guys are round the corner from Dawkins and are lovely folk.

We had 'Why Kick a Moo Cow' NZ pale ale, lovely pint with exotic southern hemisphere hops and the outstanding Basta Rosse red ales which I've waxed lyrical about on here before.

A couple of much needed grilled cheese buttys were had, then a final one in Dawkins before heading back to town. Smashin' day was had.
