White is going cause he can play CB and CM, that's cover for both Maguire and Henderson should they not be fit to play. He also had a very assured game against Romania and Godfrey looked bang average at best.

Bringing a young player into an experimental team of strangers and expecting them to do well is just a lottery.
Godfrey and most of the English players look ordinary in these circumstances.

The way to bring a young player into international football is to bring him into a strong settled side and let the more experienced players guide him through.

Southgate really is a very ordinary manager indeed.

But, Ben Godfrey is a full international now and when these championships are over he will be further integrated into the squad.
Some of the central defenders that are going are very ordinary.

Every England centreback we’ve had as far back as I can remember watching has been ruthlessly exposed. Our major tournaments are blighted by conceding set pieces and individual errors from top defenders. One bad showing from Godfrey doesn’t mean the end of the road for him.

I took it as proof that Southgate already knew his preference for White, and Godfrey was just given the game as a reward for being named in the provisonal squad.

He has as hardly played right back for us, so to get out there for England was a bit of a stretch.

His cameo at left back was not great but it looked like nerves to me and did not reflect how he players there for us.

I thought he looked uncomfortable at right back tbh. Versatility can be a curse as well as a plus. He cannot have been too hopeful though. Lot of good players never got an Engerland cap. Ward Prowse should be gutted - and Southgate may regret not taking him. My country is not going to the Euros.

Not got an issue with White going ahead of him, he's more versatile.

The real issue is Henderson and Maguire (albeit to a lesser extent) are going.
