In his defence, he did actually play in that CL campaign including in the last sixteen and as the article says was part of the squad in every game bar the final. Josemi (who hadn't been in either the league or CL squads in the latter half of the season) went instead, probably because Benitez had signed him.

I would go a step further and say he probably peaked as a manager 20 years ago. I think he’s been winging it since he left Big Red, talking himself into jobs with the help of sycophantic kopite press.
