2018/19 Bernard

Naaa you can't say that. It's obvious when a certain player has quality, regardless of the end result. It's not exactly his fault that his 10 teammates are fannies like.

I'm totally on your side mate, it was sarcasm.

Looks a player. But people have been whinging about the changes. Fact is Bernard and Lookman - two of those changes - were our best players on Tuesday based on the highlights and people on here.

He needed to start at some point. Now it's about managing him right. He was probably goosed an hour in, so it's about getting him up to speed and not overdoing it.

btw @Lanolin it's half in jest!

I understand your frustration. But some have been acting like it was wrong to make any changes, when two of the players who came in performed well.

Bernard was one of those 'pointless changes'...
He wasn't though, and that point is totally disingenuous.

Nobody's saying we shouldn't have made any changes, only that we didn't need to make seven of them. It's therefore perfectly legitimate to say that some of the changes were pointless without saying that all of them were. I'd have been perfectly happy for him to make 3/4 changes - Baines, Bernard, Tosun and one other would have worked for me - but seven was too many and led to us looking disjointed and lacking in both intensity and goal threat. Not hugely surprising when you think that we swapped out three players behind the striker who have 127 PL goals between them and replaced them with three who have...1.

Yeh but hang on, you just said Bernard was a fine change? And Lookman also played well. There was nothing wrong with switching the wingers out and it proved that with the fact that those two players were our brightest by far - Bernard especially.

The surprising change for me was Gylfi.

I wanted Pickford and Gana to stay in but I wasn't shocked that they didn't play. I can understand protecting Gana, but I really don't get the goalkeeper thing. That being said, did Stek play that badly? No, he didn't, and he kept us in it at times.

But Dowell/Gylfi was a strange one. Definitely.

Anyway, I won't derail the thread. Bernard looks quality. I'm sure he'll get better once he's fully fit as well.

But you say that like i'm contradicting myself when I've just explained why i'm not. Bernard was fine to come in alongside two players who are performing well and scoring goals. Bringing him in next to two other players who are also still finding their feet at this level was not fine. He did perfectly well in isolation, but all three of the players behind the striker wanted to come deep and run centrally, nobody wanted to go beyond the striker like Walcott and Richarlison do, and nobody wanted to press like all three of the usual players do.

Bernard looks a very fine player, he played well on Tuesday, I think he may have looked even better had he been surrounded by more quality.

Remove Richys goals so far, and Im not so sure I would start him on the left over Bernard. Bernard did well in his camo on the right flank a couple of games ago, maybe we should rest Theo against The foxes and see what Bernard can do from that flank?

What about playing like Norway.

They dont really play with a conventional striker, three attacking midfielders. Ricky, Bernard, Walcott as a front three.

You take hot tips about oil or mountains from Norway, not football. We are terrible at it!

Edit:
Its not the worst shout trying Richy up front, but I dont really like the square pegs in round holes thing.

I think Walcott would be a better bet up front, that’s if we would change it. But then you lose his threat from out wide.

It's the other changes Inthink people have bemoaned.

No point in playing stek or dowell.

Nah, we need pace against Leicester and, while Bernard is quick, he isn't a sprinter like Walcott.

Also, he seems much more comfortable on the left drifting central than on the right, where the onus would be to take on his man on the outside.

Hopefully he might get a start at the weekend. Could be the time to see Richarlison or Walcott in the centre as Tosun with his lack of pace is poor away from home if we’re looking to play on the counter.
