Bike lights

My Christmas lights take the piss. 7 presses to go through the different modes to get to static. And theres 4 sets in the house. I flicked more buttons than Ron Jeremy before I can go to bed after a night out on the bike.

Any chance of buying another canal boat Chris ?

I do so miss your daily rants about the state of the British Waterways, your missus and the various disasters you encountered, as you gently meandered through the canals and rivers of the UK.
Got one last year ... for the missus to live on in the week while at work. Surely I posted of my ice breaking adventure through the grand Union last year, where I lost my new phone?

Meanwhile the only times I've been to the boat since (90 minutes drivevaway), inevitably, is when the wife has found a problem I've had to fix, or maintenance needs doing: Let's list them .....

Replace diesel lift pump
Refurbish diesel injector pump
Replace domestic battery bank (with lithium batteries converted from a house battery)
Rewire engine room to accommodate new system
Black the Hull
Replace shower drain pump switch that's arced out
Replace domestic water pump ("It's too noisy")
Make and fit a new external chimney
Repair cratch cover
Repair fairy lamps
And next week - Replace shower drain pump ("It's too noisy")

She still makes out that she's an independent woman blah blah blah.... I've probably saved her several grands worth of work in this year alone.

Honestly fed up of having a boat, even though I loved living on one for 15 years ... this is one I didn't fit out so everything is a discovery and a disappointment.

Roll up roll up, ladies and gentlemen, 2 bits a gander, come one come all and see the chap that can't figure out how to make bike lights work...

Not fair!

He can make bike lights work, he just doesn't have the time after a 3 hour round trip to fix his wifes crotch cover, sorry, cratch cover, to press a back light button more than once. Time is of the essence y'know.

Get a dynamo you lazy sod

this is your best option, Chris you lazy sod. another option is to get a better/more complicated device and set it to always do what you want so you don't need to touch the buttons each time. I would get the Garmin Varia radar tail light and the lowest cost Edge computer*. That's a lot of equipment (£380?) to buy, but far cheaper than a hospital bill, unless your healthcare is free. And maybe drivers in the UK drive slower and pay more attention, but for Yanks on a bicycle getting good gear is a valuable investment.

*I should clarify that the benefit of the computer is you get vehicle alerts from the radar. It can also send an emergency alert with location in the event of a crash, if you have any friends or loved ones who want to respond in such an instance.

I had dynamo lights as a kid when we were skint and I only got batteries at Christmas. From what I remember, they were good fir developing thighs, they only provided ollumination when you were going too fast to do anything about any hazards you saw, and you were entirely dark where you wanted to be seen at junctions.

No way I'm putting anything expensive on my bike just to worry about it being nicked!

I suspect the dynamo hub you'd need is better than what you had as a kid, and it can't be nicked (at least not easily, it's in the wheel). Your lights should be removable and you can take them with you (although maybe dynamo lights are fixed as well). All the Garmin stuff snaps in and out and is easy to remove; if someone takes your mounts those are easy to replace.

This is the sort of thing you'd be looking at... no buttons?

If I understand correctly, the solution to me not being able to find a simple on/off rear bike light, one where I don't have to give multiple button presses to operate, and one hopefully that would be around a tenner, reflecting its simplicity, is to spend nearly 200 notes on a system that then requires me to remove the tyre, inner tube, replace the hub and all the spokes of a perfectly good wheel.

I gotta say ... and far be it for me to sound ungrateful, but its not tempting me as a solution.

I'm no bicycle mechanic myself but am pretty sure you can replace the hub without removing the tire or spokes on the wheel. Also, you'll need to install the light bracket and line as well, so it's not as easy as securing a light with a rubber band. I'm not arsed what you do either way, but my most earnest recommendation is don't waste your time and money on cheap lights that the driver won't notice.

I'd encourage you to do exactly the opposite of this advice Chris and buy some utterly crap lights as I'd quite like to hear tales from your hospital bed once you've been knocked off your bike.
