I blame sky sports. When I was a kid, most supported local teams. There was always a kid who was laughed at for being a glory supporter because he lived in Birkenhead and supported Derby County, after they won the title. This gentle rubbing prevented further glory supporting from other kids.
I see the opposite now - why would you support Lincoln City when the world is your oyster. Sit down and study the form book and make your choice.
With my mum being Swedish I have stayed loyal to the Blue and Yellow (for international games), and IFK Göteborg. Dad ensured we were brought up the correct way here and I embraced my Toffedom.
It has been assumed by some overseas that I am a rancid pee stained RS, but I find that if I just keep laughing when they ask that they shut up.
Beatles (Good Band) But I get fed up of being told that I must be so proud of them. My reply of "Just a shame they were not as good Small Faces and The Who" Tends to bring on a silence in them that makes me happy
By the way, I have seen more Everton shirts in Sweden than RS. Gotta love the Swedish Toffees gang.
I’m not technically abroad (in the north east since 5 years old) but obviously the locals don’t understand anyone not supporting a club that hasn’t won anything since 1955.
As I was actually born in Walton hospital, I always explain that Liverpool schools have an extra testing regime on your first day and we are segregated by IQ. Above 100 = Evertonian, below 100 = RS
Years ago, I was talking with a co-worker who is a big Man United fan and mentioned that I was an Everton fan. Her immediate response was: “Eww gross…I’m so sorry I’m so sorry.”
