With the emergence of Neurolink and people implanting NFC chips in their appendages for payments or unlocking things, what are the collective thoughts on such procedures and what would you have done if you could afford it?

Would Elon Musks recently revealed mishap put you off all cybernetic type implants? (Google it / Azealia Banks)

Personally I have no issue with an NFC chip implant, can see the convenience of such measures.

Trivial and needless. Your phone can do all of these things already and nobody has enough self control to put the phone down. It's essentially the techwise appendage you've described. No need to reinvent the click wheel.

I googled it and lol.

I assume this is a joke being as the click wheel has indeed been reinvented / replaced by touch screens 🤣

Yes, generally, although really it's the idea that you'd implant a chip in your skin that's outdated. Our phones do that and most people replace their phones every few years. There's no chance any insertable tech/body augmentation would last any significant amount of time before it's obsolete irrespective of how reliable it is. I'm generally pessimistic on all of this stuff, but I do appreciate the imagination of forward thinking people because that's necessary for innovation.

The only things that seem to provide real benefit through augmentation are the brain implantable chips to help with mobility, but I'm even more dismissive on this front. I don't really trust Musk or any of his companies. And quotes like this are absolute nonsense: "Musk has grand ambitions for Neuralink, saying it would facilitate speedy surgical insertions of its chip devices to treat conditions like obesity, autism, depression, and schizophrenia."

Musks alleged motivations are highly questionable given his recent behaviour, but I have to say some of the stuff being done to control tremors in Parkinson’s via Deep Brain Stimulation is life changing.

Regardless of that, this an interesting article (if long) from the MOD from 4 years ago, so the Gov certainly take it seriously.

There's spinal cord stimulators implanted to alleviate pain. Some earlier versions burnt out. Got a friend on the wait list atm for a replacement.

I’d never even heard of that, but when you think about it, there’s quite a lot of stuff out there already, cochlear implants, lens replacement surgery, prosthetics that react to brain function, it’s really quite amazing what’s already being done.

pacemakers, and todays news about kids eyesight (gene therapy and amazing delivery).

@Joey66 was the first person in the world, to have Dyson powered pacemaker fitted and other than causing a small thermonuclear accident when he was visiting Jersey, he seems to be doing okay.
