Boris Johnson

London, this is what you have elected....

"The mayoral candidate says in Friends, Voters, Countrymen (2001) that "if gay marriage was OK - and I was uncertain on the issue - then I saw no reason in principle why a union should not be consecrated between three men, as well as two men, or indeed three men and a dog."

"On the tape Johnson is heard agreeing to supply the address of the News of the World journalist Stuart Collier in order for his former schoolmate Darius Guppy to have Collier beaten up for knowing too much about Guppy's failed insurance fraud."

"On 16 October 2004, The Spectator carried an unsigned editorial[37] comment criticising a perceived trend to mawkish sentimentality by the public. Using British hostage Kenneth Bigley as an example, the editorial claimed the inhabitants of Bigley's home city of Liverpool were wallowing in a "vicarious victimhood"; that many Liverpudlians had a "deeply unattractive psyche"; and that they refused to accept responsibility for "drunken fans at the back of the crowd who mindlessly tried to fight their way into the ground" during the Hillsborough disaster, a contention at odds with the findings of the Taylor Report. The editorial closed with: "In our maturity as a civilisation, we should accept that we can cut out the cancer of ignorant sentimentality without diminishing, as in this case, our utter disgust at a foul and barbaric act of murder."

"Although Johnson now states that he is proud of his Turkish Muslim ancestry his previous comments paint a very different picture, highly appealing to Islamophobic groups. He wrote "It is time to reassert British values…That means disposing of the first taboo, and accepting that the problem is Islam. Islam is the problem. To any non-Muslim reader of the Koran, Islamophobia — fear of Islam — seems a natural reaction, and, indeed, exactly what that text is intended to provoke. Judged purely on its scripture — to say nothing of what is preached in the mosques — it is the most viciously sectarian of all religions."

"...In the article in question,[54] Johnson mocked Tony Blair's brief visits to world troublespots, acting as "Supertone", bringing peace to the world while the UK deteriorated; Blair would arrive as "the tribal warriors will all break out in watermelon smiles to see the big white chief", just as "it is said the Queen has come to love the Commonwealth, partly because it supplies her with regular cheering crowds of flag-waving piccaninnies"."

"She was referring especially to the occasion on which Johnson, as a journalist in 1999, accused the Macpherson Inquiry, which reported on police racism following the Lawrence murder, of 'hysteria', adding that the "recommendation that the law might be changed so as to allow prosecution for racist language or behaviour 'other than in a public place'" was akin to "Ceausescu's Romania""

So, a professed Islamophobe, a man who is against gay rights in any form, called black people "piccaninies" with "watermelon smiles", hates people from other parts of the country, like Liverpool, and was against the Steven Lawrence inquiry (a young black man that was murdered by a racist mob, but the police did nothing due to institutional racism), was fanatically for the Iraq War, opposed the Kyoto agreement, supported the election of George W. Bush, opposed to the minimum wage, and countless other stupid right wing things.

Well done London. You deserve it all.

Copied off a MySpace bulletin from one of my mates. The man really is a brain donor (Boris, not my mate )

It's probably not good form as the thread isn't about him, but has everyone forgotten some of the ghastly things Mr Livingstone has said and done? I know the north is historically Labour territory but surely the good folks here aren't so rose tinted?

I've long argued for considerably smaller governments to reduce the control politicians have over our lives and given the distaste many appear to have for Boris, and the equal distaste many have for Ken, it still amazes me quite how so many in this country are happy to have to give 40%+ of their income over to an organisation they quite probably didn't even vote for.

As an adopted Londoner and voter for Boris I should probably stick up for him. He has a public persona as a bumbling guy but if you look a bit deeper than the media generated facade you'll see a man that's incredibly smart, a darn site smarter than anyone on this board. Read some of his newspaper columns, the magazine he's edited for years or even watch some of his documentaries on Rome etc. and you might see that.

Of course we live in a politically correct age so it's not surprising that many have decided to brand him a racist and so forth.

Boris is certainly intelligent, graduating with a 2:1 from Oxford. But Bruce, he's from the sort of background where every opportunity is given so that people get to attend the right school, correct university and so on. This class of person has an array of contacts in politics and business. It's not, therefore, surprising that Boris should be doing reasonably well.

In respect to him being 'smarter than anyone on this board', then I would think it's possible, but not certain. I've certainly got a better class degree than him. I suspect other posters have also outsmarted him educationally, or are at least on the way to doing so. I think you're in danger of mistaking power and privilege for brilliance.

given what the tories have just managed to gain in the locals i think bj has just redressed the balance, call it ying/yang. surely he will remind the nation of just what pompous upper class knacker sacks these people are, probably saving us from another tory gov. come general election time.

There's a big difference between intelligence which consists of knowing what to say and intelligence which consists of knowing not what to say.

I'm not actually basing my opinion of his intelligence on his university education, but more on what I've read of his, both in his articles and his books.

I'm generally more libertarian that conservative so politically don't really support any of them, but if given a choice between Boris or Ken, I'd choose Boris every day of the week.

I'd choose neither Ken or Boris, so am thankful I didn't have to vote. Although I'll say one thing for Ken, he's an arrogant [Poor language removed] but he's got the beginning of something resembling tact.

Boris, on the other hand, typifies the lunatic at any social gathering who goes around muttering absurdities and offending every possible person he can. I can't say I'm a fan of his writing because it seems to me that much of it is poor quality and uninspiring, aimed at merely upsetting the left. I don't think Boris actually gives much of damn about the people of London. Rather, becoming mayor is a jolly wheeze to him. What fun it will be to be at city hall.

:P

Its obvious why really.

To many do gooders and people who want change for the sake of change. 'Why did you vote for Boris' - 'Because I felt we needed a change' What the [Poor language removed]? Thats not a reason.

Even worse on the news 'Why did you vote for Boris' - 'I dont know really, it was mainly just a vote against Labour'

Clearly the congestion charge, do-gooders and damn right idiots are what got that clown as Mayor.
