Brands stamps his authority

It seems they are quite clear on who is doing what (unlike Walsh and Koeman). Brands is preparing the squad for Silva, he won’t lump him with any players that Silva doesn’t want but they’ll have a consensus on a list of targets and a list of outs to match the profile of a squad that Brands has set. Brands will then be doing all the donkey work on the transfers (rather than the previous approach which saw Koeman, Walsh, Elstone, Bill and Moshiri all have a go at different points). Silva therefore only has to focus on one thing, training the squad that he has agreed on for the premier league season.

In order to answer this question, I need to put it on equal footing - i.e., what does this position do in our 4 "major" sports - american football, baseball, basketball and hockey

the DoF position is similar to that of the General Manager (GM) in all these sports. In most cases, the head coach coaches, and GM selects the players, and more often than not when the head coach wants the GM and control of the scouting, drafting and signing, it's a train wreck, particularly in football. So over here, we are very used to the GM role. The head coach is in the news more and makes more money generally than the GM, but the GM is undoubtedly the man in charge of acquiring talent.

There are some cases, but it's the minority, where the "face" of the franchise is the GM - like Billy Beane of the Oakland A's - he of Moneyball fame. But more often than not the head coach is the face of the team. However, the best-run franchises across all sports have a respected GM that works on trades and makes the right signings, and he's on the same page as the coach.

We are used to this over here. I'm optimistic that with Brands/Silva, we have a good partnership on which we can base the future, which allows Brands to do his thing, and Silva to do his - and they are on the same page

The key to the whole thing will be how the 2 get on, if they have a good relationship everything will be funky, but if things go a bit south, then it wont be ideal. Brands doesnt suffer fools and he strikes me as somebody who takes no crap, same for Silva really, should be interesting.

The round of interviews he did last week plus the press conference he did this week is about all I want to see or hear of Brands from now on. He should just fade back into the bureaucracy of the club and not seek - or be asked - to go front and centre in explaining our transfers or general football plan. He is not the manager of Everton, and the manager is the only one we should be wanting to hear from on that score.
I hope that after it's all died down now that Brands backs out of the public eyes and does the biz on the QT. It'd undermine Silva if he was front and centre all the time especially if we go through a sticky patch the press will be asking about Silvas future. Let Silva be the front man now.

Oh god Dave and I are of a mind?.

Anyone got a map to "Davestown", have a koolaid on ice for me.

I think the best situation is that if things go south, it's Silva who goes and not Brands. Having that DoF/GM role that's the true overseer of operations gives a club/franchise more stability, IMHO. And it's on the GM to get the right coach in to get the most out of the players selected. This will help to reduce the amount of "churn" in the squad, as players ideally will be more suited to a style of play that the GM/club wants, and not specifically suited to the whims of how different managers want to play. Koeman/Walsh was a train wreck b/c they weren't on the same page philosophically - it's critical the DoF and manager think similarly, if not exactly

Do any of the Dutch toffees know what his media exposure levels were in the Netherlands? To be honest, it didnt strike me that he wanted to be on the stage with Silva and i suspect he was told he had to be part of the big media unveiling. but he strikes me as the kind of person who wants to keep his head down and get on with things? We shall see soon enough, but he did seem to emphasis that the performance side was down to Marco, so maybe we will only see him on high days and holidays?

Interesting times ahead though, nobody can dispute that :)

He has a face for radio tbf

I’m not into all this ‘were going to do this...we are going to do that’ if I’m honest just do it and tell us when it’s done! If brands and silva can work good as a pair which I’m hopeful for I think it could be the start of something good, and also I think it will be the future of football with manager and director working closely

Well what does Silva have to do?

Hes got no players to train, hes got no matches to prepare for, hes even admitted that its Brands job to talk to Agents, as I said when you were crying about appointing a manager, we dont need 1 for another month.
TBF, he probably is right now. Once the close season is out the way though I see no reason to hear from him. Marco Silva is the manager.

I suppose you would rather we had Steve Walsh back who bent over and let Koeman reem him at will.
No. I have nothing against Brands. I've explained that. But here's how I see it: the hierarchy of the club on the playing side of things is....

Manager

Assistant manager

First team coaches

Captain of the team

The rest of the players

Director of football

He seems the part but let's wait until we see some tangible changes (transfers, structure and coaching) before we all blow our load after about 2 interviews.

After last season taking everything we do with a pinch of salt.

I’m not sure how it’s worked elsewhere. I was surprised to hear players from PSV talking about him - almost as though they would potentially follow him or they were recognising his influence in bringing them there. Normally you hear that sort of talk about managers and not DOF

Exactly. It makes me nervous that such a reaction has occurred. You can only have one chief at the club. I wouldn't want to see friction over clashes of personality.

It's certainly the perception so far that Brands is in charge. No. That cant stand. It's destabilising and it's one of the reasons I never wanted a DoF role created at the club.

It's early days yet, but as said: I'd like to think we';ll hear less and less of from Brands as the months and season's pass.
