The idea of handing out toffees at Goodison dates back to the 1890s with Old Ma Bushell's Toffee House. To compete against her rival, Mother Nobletts Toffee Shop, Old Ma Bushell dressed her daughter, Jemima Bushell, in her best clothes and sent her to matches with a basket full of individually wrapped Everton toffees which she handed out to the crowds.

In 1953 Mary Gorry continued this tradition. Her and a friend made a few alterations to a bridesmaid dress, then went to Goodison dressed up, as Jemima Bushell did, to hand out Everton toffees. Mary did this at every Everton match for three years before handing over the job to Peggy Morley.

How much was she getting paid and how much did we spend on the sweets she launched into the crowd.. No mention of this as mitigation in the PSR hearing.. She cost us 8 points.

Health & safety stopped it - someone might get a toffee mint in the eye etc - plus back in my day the scrum of young lads you would have thought they were in a scrum for a gold bar mate

Yeah, the difference now is they don’t get thrown. I suppose that’s why it feels like it’s gone away to many. I remember them coming whizzing past your ears!

Probably health and safety,where there's blame there's a claim culture now adays.Toffee lady hit me in the eye.

Daughter did it twice, I was given 2 huge bags to carry round with the instruction that i wasnt covered by insurance but she was for exactly that reason. The bloke with us from the Club was trying to take Ricky Tomlinsons head off in the main stand with them though
