Light cycling with no weight on pedals is a recovery tool after surgery.
It promotes blood flow into the leg and stops muscle atrophy - wasting of muscle.
He'd also be getting heavy massage to help. blood flow into leg

Doesn't mean he'll be back any sooner.

This is true but I don't think anyone is expecting him back in the royal blue anytime soon. The speed in which he's been able to get to the stage where he is doing light cycling and walking with no crutch is impressive though and causes us to be optimistic he could represent his country at the WC which would be massive for the lad!

Agreed it won't make his bone heal quicker but avoiding the debilitating muscle loss will surely help him get back quicker as he won't have to rebuild the leg muscles?

it is the very first stage.

I had knee surgery a few years ago and was pedaling a stationary bike and doing aqua jogging in a pool after 8 days.
that's when the really hard work kicks in - prescribed exercises at least twice a day, with sleep being crucial due to the healing process it allows.

his good physical state before the injury will be of much more benefit to him.
bone breaks can be notoriously difficult to heal correctly

best of luck to him
