I feel like we’re watching history twist in real time. America isn’t just flirting with fascism—it’s neck deep in it. The parallels to 1930s Europe aren’t academic anymore.

It’s visceral. Systemic. And terrifyingly normalised.

The dismantling of institutions, the vilifying of minorities, the cult of personality—it’s textbook. We've read this story in history books. The fact we’re now in the story is surreal. And utterly civilisational.

What’s happening in the US isn’t politics as usual. It’s a defining moment, the kind our grandchildren will ask us about. The slow slide to authoritarianism always feels distant—until you realise you’re standing on the slope.
This is what many of us have been saying for years.

But Genocide Joe and trans people picking up women in restrooms, or something

Losing their jobs.

As said before, they are failing us, b/c the politicians first and foremost seek to stay in office. If they can then also get something accomplished, that's secondary
But so many, high ranking politicians watching the news today, 100 kids killed every day on average, and not speaking out..... strange.

“And, indeed, as he listened to the cries of joy rising from the town, Rieux remembered that such joy is always imperiled. He knew what those jubilant crowds did not know but could have learned from books: that the plague bacillus never dies or disappears for good; that it can lie dormant for years and years in furniture and linen chests; that it bides its time in bedrooms, cellars, trunks, and bookshelves; and that perhaps the day would come when, for the bane and the enlightening of men, it would rouse up its rats again and send them forth to die in some well-contented city.”

Those of us outside the US can only hope that its political institutions are sturdy enough to prevail, and that enough good Americans stand up and be counted when it matters.

Am I missing something here with these tariffs? Were the USA previously not charging any duty whatsoever on any of their imports? If that were the case, why have the UK, and presumably other countries too been trying to set up trade deals with them.? If they aren't charging duties on our exports to them anyway, what's the point? It just doesn't make sense.

Actually I've just looked this up. The tariffs are completely separate to the import duties that they already charge. These existing import duties vary in type and amount depending on the goods, but in general equate to a little less than the 10% that we normally charge on US imports to the UK. So this is a completely new additional charge over and above what is already being charged by the US. Nice one Donald.

Nothing he does makes any sense

Why are you wasting your time trying to understand anything this orange buffoon does?
