The point is with these products, you don't have to buy them and eat or drink them it is your choice. Seems though as your government does not trust you.

As opposed to the "Premier Dad" Ontario Liberals of the last 10 years? All governments like to regulate; makes them feel they're doing something.

Federal government is Conservative. Most of the 10 provinces have Liberal governments. It's always been a pattern of sorts, with opposite parties governing federally vs. provincially.

We have three main national parties -- Conservative, Liberal and New Democrat, the NDP being closest to UK's Labour in ideology. There's the Parti Quebecois currently governing in that province, as well as federal Bloc Quebecois party that was reduced to four seats in the national Parliament in the last election (it only fields candidates in Quebec and its goal is secession). The right-leaning Saskatchewan Party is the governing party in that province (and the premier, Brad Wall, enjoys the highest popularity of any Canadian premier) and the Wild Rose Party in Alberta is to the right of the ruling Conservatives in that province.

How many governments of developed countries don't have some form of rules/regulations surrounding food? Fairly sure there are UK instances of this.

Well from our end (in the UK and EU) there are laws governing certain imports. Its not a case 'you don't have to eat or drink them', there are permitted levels of contaminants which are permitted by the EU, therefore would not be allowed into free circulation. They are circulated to Port Health Authorities and the imports are stopped and returned to the Country, or destroyed depending on the public health risk.

For example, the EU have regulation regarding the importation of plastic kitchenware from China and Honk Kong, a very basic everyday product (used by millions) which has controls against it. Its the same with the rise in these USA Candy shops popping up everywhere, half the stuff imported is stopped at the border and destroyed, although the permitted levels are acceptable in the states, in Europe they are not
