Cannibal chef given life sentence

Morley won the first Mr Gay UK contest in 1993

A chef who stabbed his lover to death before cutting flesh off his thigh and cooking and easting it has been jailed.
Anthony Morley, 36, the first winner of Mr Gay UK, was told he would serve a minimum of 30 years in prison for the murder of 33-year-old Damian Oldfield.
Morley was convicted of murdering Mr Oldfield at his home in Bexley Avenue, Leeds, by a jury at the city's Crown Court on Friday.
The judge said the murder was "one of the most gruesome" he had encountered.
Morley slashed Mr Oldfield's throat before stabbing him several times.
Sentencing, Judge James Stewart QC said: "Not only did you murder your victim by cutting his throat and stabbing him but you cut him up, cooked him and ate part of him.
"Before this case I had associated cannibalism with eras long gone, with the tale of Robinson Crusoe. No longer.
"You have plumbed depths rarely encountered in our court."

Victim Mr Oldfield had been in a relationship with Morley

As Judge Stewart set out how long Morley would spend behind bars, there was applause from the public gallery and a shout of "murderer".
Morley, who won the first Mr Gay UK title in 1993 had previously had some kind of relationship with openly gay Mr Oldfield, the court was told, and the pair had arranged to meet on the day of the murder.
They later went back to Morley's house, where the defendant prepared a meal for them both before the pair went upstairs to his bedroom.
Morley later walked into a nearby takeaway wearing a bloodstained dressing gown and flip-flops and told staff and police he had killed someone because they tried to rape him.
During the trial, Morley said he could not remember killing Mr Oldfield, who sold advertising space for gay lifestyle magazine Bent, or any of his subsequent actions.
He had denied murder on the grounds of provocation or diminished responsibility.

Some people will eat anything, I lived in Scotland in the late 70's and had a deep fried Mars bar once. I had to wash it down with a few cans of Iron Bru.

Apparently he fried him in olive oil with some fresh herbs:o.

Bloody disgusting, I'd have sweated off some onions and garlic and then added a few mushrooms myself. Bottle of Chianti as well maybe, much nicer:P.

In the book, it was with a big Amarone, not Chianti at all. I'd take that to be honest. But not the human flesh.

that's it we should ban all gay people from living in the UK that'll teach 'em to eat eachother.

Who says our judges are out of touch!

Probably somewhat a controversial question this but i'll ask it anyway and see what kind of replies i'll get : can anyone give me a good balanced well thought out answer as to why the killing and eating of a human being is worse than that of an animal?

I'm not saying it is or it isn't but i'd assume everybody reading this believes that it is, so why?

There really are some strange folks walking this earth, that's for sure. A few years ago, there was a similair story regarding cannibalism in Germany. He searched for a victim on the internet, by asking if someone was prepared to be slaughtered and eaten by him. Strangely enough, there was someone prepared to help him with his request. So, after they met up with eachother, they started planning. After cutting of the victims genitals, they both ate from it. After they both waited for the victim to blead to deatch, he cut him in pieces and put him in the freezer. I believe he also got sentenced to life in jail.

Certainly gives a new meaning to the phrase, invited to dinner.::dodgy::D

its impossible to rationalize human squeemishness about these sorts of things IMHO. i personally, and i think this is the case for most, just find the idea disturbing on an instinctive level, which precedes any sort of rational thought. It might be because we perceive a greater connectedness with human meat just based on the implied semblance to ourselves, as opposed to eating animal meat.

most modern societies rely on an accepted distinction between humans and animals. people rely on animals for many uses that would be considered barbaric to use a human being for (farming, horseback riding, the iditerod, animal testing just to name a few). this general greater sanctity of human life may imply that the bodies of human beings deserve a greater degree of respect than the bodies of animals, which is why consuming one might be considered wrong.

Good answer. Like you said i think its just a natural instinct built in to look after ones own, therefor to kill and consume a fellow human being is deemed wrong, yet to kill and consume (certain) species is ok because they're not human.

There are probably other reasons such as souls and spirits which affect it as well.

Could also say there is an arrogance among the human race that values our lives so highly over other species just because we believe ourselves to be more intelligent.

I suppose the best we could come up with is that there is an unspoken but tacit agreement that we respect the dead, and treat their bodies as somehow sacred. If only for the sake of their families and friends, we tend to treat the dead as if alive, and conscious. Shame we're not nicer to animals, in my opinion.

The victim was madder than the murderer there:o

Yeah. As humans we do have circles of loyalty. Lots of animals do too but maybe limit it to their offspring or herd or whatever. 'Most' people would save another person from drowning if they could to the detriment of , say, a cat. And we 'all' feel sadder hearing about the death of people than the death of animals. Some people infer from that fact that humans have more right to live but I'd save a loved one or friend before a stranger. they don't have more right to live, they're just more important to me.
Anyway, if you had to eat human flesh to survive, would you? Which part would you eat? Would it be immoral to put pineapple on it?
