I play sport but I'm a bit overweight to...my problem is the calorie intake. I'm gonna work on that, fitness is ok, but once you pass thirty I guess you can't drink 3 bottles of coke a day, sneak a mcdonalds and have two packets of buttons while reading the paper followed by lasagne for tea without it effecting your girth ever so slightly....

This bit really hurts mate. Im furious about it really.

Knowing this I would have squeezed a few more Big Macs into my twenties.

yeah its sucks to be thirty +, it's funny, when I was in my twenties, I ate whatever I wanted, trained footie twice a week, followed by a saturday game, followed by a sunday league game (and at my peak followed by a sunday afternoon game and then evening 5 aside, ..crazy), I even went Ice Hockey training Friday nights...

Then as I moved into a new chapter, post thirty, got married, had one kid, another on the way, the wife discouraged me from weekend footie, so now I only play 7 aside mondays and Ice Hockey once a week, and suprise, suprise that git on the Wii fit says I'm overweight....well you would be to you son of a bi***, AAAaAAAarrgggh!!!

Anyway, need to work on eating less chocolate, drinking less coca cola, and less mcdonalds drive thru'....

Thats the problem with me, I was very active in my -30 years, but when I hit 30+ my life changed and I didnt have as much time to keep up with the football and squash I used to play. Once you get out the habit its hard to get back in, I reckon a game of squash would kill me at the moment.

If your treadmill inclines:

Set treadmill at medium-fast walking pace (where you are just feeling that you are walking faster than normal but not rushing)
Do 30 minutes (plus 2 minute warm-up and warm-down at slower speed)
Once you can happily deal with the 30 minutes, increase incline by 1°
Once you can happily deal with the 30 minutes and gradient, increase by further 1°
Continue as above up to 15° (if it inclines that far)
Now increase speed by .1 increments until you get to point where either you or machine break

Your body and lungs will love you.

Thats really useful moutain man, thanks a lot.

You live in a sunny location so I'd recommend getting out of the gym and doing your stuff outdoors. You get an ever changing scenery, people to look at, bit of fresh air etc. Cycling is my thing but if you prefer running do that, or swimming is another excellent exercise. If you don't fancy doing laps of a pool, get out into the sea and swim about.

Ive upped swimming a bit thanks mate, and you're right about the getting out and jogging bit. I get bored on the treadmill.

True. I live in a mountainous location and getting out and about is far better.

But (and it's a fairly big one) getting out and about often involves time and sometimes preparation and is weather-dependent and is easy to put to one side when you're busy.

That above, boring as it may be, helped me get into some of the best shape of my life in ca. 45 minutes most days of the week. And I was running around the Himalayas like a little running thing.

Bruce stole my thunder a little on this one with the outdoors advice. I put on around 50 lbs in my 30s, got rid of it all in my 40s, and have kept it off into 50s.

The 2 keys for me were running (no cardio works as well as running for weights loss) - outside - and gradually changing my eating habits. I changed one thing at a time, and waited a few weeks until the change was habt, before changing the next thing. Examples of things to change:
1. Stopped drinking Coke, Sprite, etc - soda / Perrier instead
2. 5 weeks later, cut back on French Fries

And so on. I still eat chocolate every day (but less). Don't diet - just change eating habits.

Hope that helps.
