I imagine there was a reason the club wanted to dampen things down a bit.

There’s no pleasing our fans. It’d be worse if there’s really nothing in it and then we didn’t end up with Ancelotti. Fans would be saying “Everton that” for months and assuming we just blew it at the 11th hour.
