No, but I would rather have the game that Brighton play between the two 16-meters, than the game that we play. Precisely because they are so ineffective, I think we win today.

Scored more, conceded the same, more points. Everything else on there is subjective and therefore irrelevant. Some people loved Martinez’s football, it sent others to sleep. What everyone likes is winning though, however it occurs. If a team is winning no one talks about the football (Klopp’s Liverpool have played kick and rush for years yet no one has cared).

Of course. Brighton are struggling with the most important thing in football, and it usually happens within 16 meters. Everything else they do quite well, and that is what the coach usually has the most control over.

Football is about scoring goals, and not conceding goals. But before you score goals, you have to create chances, and to avoid conceding goals, you have to prevent your opponent from creating chances. Brighton is a team that masters this better than us, but still scores less goals and concedes more goals than us.

Voodoo. Its all about Voodoo. Can only explain why the masters Brighton are in so much trouble and poo Everton aren't.

How much of this is coaching though, or how much is it that we have a better defence and attack than Brighton and they have a better midfield (when Allan and Docuoure aren’t both fit).

If we put Bissouma and Lallana in our team and gave them Davies and Siggurdson do we still think they’d play lovely intricate front foot football or that we would struggle with keeping possession? No. Equally if we swapped strike forces we’d have a massive goal scoring issue and they’d be slotting for fun.

The problem at Everton for years has been the midfield. Even under Moyes we had some very good footballers like Arteta Pienaar Osman Cahill but no pace, ergo when a Chelsea or Liverpool rolled into town they would run us off the pitch. Since then we’ve had equally slow players who weren’t good on the ball either and so the problems have continued.

We had one season 13/14 where (Barry aside) we put out quick players from 1-11 in most games and especially in midfield with McCarthy and Barkley. Since then it’s been slow player after slow player which means we will never be able to dominate and retain the ball. Every ball that Kante Bissouma Fabinho Pogba Rodri wins easily in a 50 50 is a ball that Siggurdson or Davies might not even make a tackle for as they’re so far behind the play. That is the difference between a team dominating possession, or a team that is forced to sit deep as they keep giving up possession and can’t retain it.

Until this ridiculous habit we have of buying slow ineffectual midfielders stop we won’t win anything let alone win consistent games of football. Even this season, look at our record when we have Allan and Doucoure both in the same team as opposed to when we have only one or none.

Cleverley Barry Schneiderlin Siggurdson Klaassen Rooney Davies Gomes (post injury) Bernard just all far far too slow for top level football. This is supposed to be the engine room of the team and we can neither keep the ball nor win it back, so why do people think we will be dominating possession?

We need Allan Docuoure Gbamin plus cover in each position that are fast and strong. Then we can rotate for injuries, and rest players without these massive drop offs. As long as Davies Siggurdson Gomes keep getting minutes for us though we will keep losing the midfield battle. No other premier league team would play them.

Exactly! I have said this for the past few years, and there are loads who won't accept it, but their m.o. is to get the ball in the opponents' last third as fast, and as much, as possible, and then allow their 'rocket-fuelled', tricky, speedy, cheating, asthmatic forwards (not that I am in any way biased or bitter!) do the rest.

Where’s BigIg? He’d be slathering over this stats like a seagull on Brighton pier over a discarded tray of chips.

Nice new avatar btw @Egil Olsen .

Pretty much. If you remember how Brighton played before Potter took over, it's like night and day. It is not the case that Potter has brought quality player after quality player. The change in playing style happened immediately. But this is not about a specific style of play, but more about what is effective in the long run.

An effective playing style means that the team creates goal chances, and prevents the opponent from doing the same. Brighton have been better than us at this, but we have more individual quality in PIckford, DCL and Richarlison (Where matches are decided). At the same time, Brighton are struggling to survive in the PL. But it is easier to do something with individual quality, than a club that is poorly managed and struggling to find an identity.

Still, I think Ancelotti will make us even better next season, and we will get more quality. So my point is not to criticize Ancelotti. I also think we will win the match today. But I'm a little tired of all the excuses. We have so many injuries, Burnley have a fantastic team, it is impossible to play a different type of football than we do, etc.

Hopefully the people in charge of the club sit down and analyze the situation, and do not blame bad luck and everything else. Why do we have so many injuries / do we have more injuries than other opponents? Why do we create so few chances? Is it due to the quality of the players, or are there other factors? How can we optimize the training, and get the most out of the players? How can we make good investments in the player market?

He's saying we need 5 wins to reach Europe. Europa sure, CL will require more. Still the math is a little questionable I think. 5 wins and say a couple draws gets us to 64. RS get 64 by winning 4 of 7 which with their fixtures is in range. My guess is 6th will be in the high 60s. It is a big ask.

Massive game tonight I think, after the weekend's results. Win and the top 6 is still there for us, lose and suddenly the possibility of a second consecutive bottom half looks a serious one. I don't care what anyone says, that would be a serious failure and the alarm bells would be massively going for me at that point.

I’m sure there are people that will come on here and tell you 11th wouldn’t be a failure because we won at an empty Anfield.
