Not for nothing but why not just release them outright if nobody is going to come in for them? Just punt them out the door and be done with them. We're not going to play them, one way or another we're paying their wages, just get them completely out of the club entirely.

The contract has terms in it stating you need to be paid X for Y amount of years. If we simply pay X now contract is fulfilled, no?

We could agree to buy them out, but they'd have to be up for that too, and most of them probably won't be

That would be termination, which no doubt a decent employment lawyer would make hay with. Reputational also damage etc.
Also, pretty sure the terms of payment would be laid out, ie monthly salary, bonuses etc. Termination would be a change to the terms.
There is no point going down that route.

I don’t think it’s that simple. I’m pretty sure the terms are more involved than that.
