2020/21 Carlo Ancelotti

It's amazing that when we put in performances like last night and about 5 or 6 other times this season, it's the players fault for a lot of people.

Whenever we did the same under Martinez, koeman, silva and Allardyce it was, 'sack him in the morning'. Ancelloti cannot be criticised according to some people.

Anyway, until we can recruit players who can receive the ball in midfield and can offload it with 1 or 2 touches FORWARDS, or who can turn and advance at pace themselves, then we will forever have to put up with being penned in our own half and playing cowardly passes sideways or backwards for a huge chunk of games. Or maybe carlo can coach these players better at breaking the high press against us.

It’s all comes down too, Doucoure Gylfi and Gomes just decided that pressing was not going to occur. They won the midfield, forced us back and allowed them to dictate everything

Woeful effort from everyone in the middle of the park

What were you expecting from those two? That they’d suddenly be busting a gut running around everywhere? Every single one of us knew how that midfield was going to function from the second we saw the team.

He should of been able to pull both players and formation out of a hat and beaten Fulham, the fact is they just didn't turn up for him for this game. It happens... next.

This. It’s Siggy or Gomes for me not both in the middle. James can be on the right but not with Coleman at rb. Shamed that our options are limited with Delph and Gbamin been injured like forever.

It was sickening watching Sigurdsson trying to close down their centre backs in the first half yesterday. So slow, they’d had the ball in midfield by the time he got to their centre back.

Not being funny but who do you think we are? We don’t have any right to turn up against anyone expecting to roll them over, we’re Everton who have been crap for decades and finished 12th last season. We have to fight for every point in this league. Unbelievably arrogant and delusional way of thinking, that.

I don’t think playing 5 slow central midfielders was the right thing to do, regardless of what you think of Iwobi.

So the answer then was Iwobi?

Iwobi would have changed everything?

Not for me. He didn't deserve to start after his 'effort' in the game before it.

Indeed.

And Davies.

Sigurdsson was just a waste of space floating around Richarlison/Rodriguez.

They pissed the midfield - I think Richarlison/Rodriguez/Sigurdsson needed to drop and come looking for the ball more because the midfield was just that bad.

I read Richarlison touched the ball 4 times in the first half and 11 in total. He has to come looking for possession when it's not working.

I don't think Sigurdsson was 'in the middle' yesterday.

He was pretty much upfront.

It was as though Richarlison, Sigurdsson and Rodriguez were told just to do whatever they wanted up top.

Gomes and Davies were in the middle, Doucoure seemed to be in the middle/covering the right.

The only player who was getting stuck in and not letting them walk through us yesterday was Tom Davies and he was hauled off. That’s one thing I couldn’t get my head around. Maybe he wasn’t following instructions of just backing off and allowing them to run through us?

It’s not just those 2, there were 5 people in or around the middle of the park, with the exception of Davies nobody really tried to even bother chasing.

We’ve witnessed both Gomes and the Icelandic tit, in previous weeks, actually try and put effort in and close space down.

As well as that there was no movement, no running into pockets of space it was beyond inept from 4 out of 5 player.

Bernard, Iwobi or even king don’t change that midfield and that’s were the game was lost

I haven’t witnessed this.

What Andre Gomes had done to deserve to stay on the pitch I will never, ever, ever, ever know.

It’s strange. You look at his comments which GOT posted after the defeats to Newcastle and Fulham and he mentions fight, desire & spirit, yet hauls the only player who’s showing any of that off and leaves Atrocious Gomes on who did nothing, absolutely nothing.

Do they play a high line?

I mean I'm not sure we've lost to Southampton at home only away.

I'll try to clarify my point, against top teams, who can to attack us, keep the ball, and press forward, we are well suited to counter attack. I don't think thats what West Ham, Fulham or Newcastle do. Leeds press chaotically and get picked apart with ease, which we did, but we missed lots of chances and had a very dubious goal chalked off.
Yes and no. It depends on the situation, but they have different pressure patterns. These are very effective. They also have a far more vertical approach than us when they win the ball, and when they lose the ball they press immediately.

There are many ways to win matches, and each team must find its identity. Based on the players they have available.
