Big Sam

HK won the title twice & liked European football - The Catt seen it as an inconvenience - TBF The Catt used youth players homegrown signed the local & from away as he had great foresight to realise the future stars in football would become unaffordable -ā¦.Catterick built two title winning teams so Iād have to go for him as Manager. No doubt, Kendall was the better footballer of the two.
I did not realise he was a Rugby manager in your areaBig Sam![]()
Lucky enough to have lived through both these managers.
Hard to call in terms of who was the greater, but both engendered supreme high standards and excellent football.
God bless em both.
I would not say by a mile - but HK won more - the 1963 team was mainly purchased but most of it was John Carey's team almost - The Catt was a disciplinary fanatic & soon fetched glory - note two very good chairman led those successful teams too....!Kendall by a mile on the basis of their enormously different level of expenditure.
Well said mateI think it is a generation thing, more for me though Harry was simply the best as were his teams and the football they played was outstanding against teams that played outstanding football themselves. I enjoyed the success Howardāsā teams brought and gave us great pleasure but understand why, those who never saw Cattericksās teams, would vote for Kendallsāsides.
Wouldnāt it be brilliant to see success in the near future so we could all enjoy it together!
Yep my dad saw him in action and Harry was cr#p according to himā¦.Catterick built two title winning teams so Iād have to go for him as Manager. No doubt, Kendall was the better footballer of the two.
Yep I've got that Dave,it's an excellent read!!I'd recommend the Catterick book by Rob Sawyer to anyone wanting to familiarise themselves with that team.
That reminds me to get a couple of Rob's other books:Yep I've got that Dave,it's an excellent read!!

...also, Catterick didn't have the nightmare of breaking Liverpool's stranglehold, as they were in the 2nd Division and stillI was born in 1961, so just remember the 69/70 title win. The football was sublime at times. As others have said, the Cat built two title winning sides. But Howie must be given huge credit for winning the title in 87, given the amount of injuries we had in the first part of the season. Perhaps a draw is fair
