Cenk Tosun

As much as we might mock him now, remember he was a decent striker before he got two crucible ligament injuries. Another player robbed from having any sort of career for Everton by injury, see Bolasie Besic Gomes Gbamin Oviedo Mangala Traore Kone. We’ve called them all useless or rubbish but imagine they didn’t get career altering injuries and actually played to their best levels. We’d have either recouped a fair bit of money or a few might still be playing in the first team.

….watched him for 20mins on debut & that was enough to suggest he wasn’t a ‘decent striker’, certainly not for us. He had nothing that we needed, I wondered how any DoF could watch him & bring him in. Then Moshiri spoke out that he acquired Tosun, which says it all.

Saying all that, he’d be better than Rondon.

Hahaha no he wasn’t.

Sorry Saint Domingo, you usually come across as a. Knowledgeable guy and a decent poster but that's nonsensical.

When was he a decent striker never mind any ligament damage, a poor player in a substandard league that we have previously been burnt in b4.

If you can show me the 'decent' games he's actually played I will happily apologise,, farmer's league fc and rubbish internationals won't count.

Do champions league games for Besiktas and premier league games for Everton not count?

Did I just make up that period when he first arrived and scored 5 goals for us? I’m not saying he was good in that period pre-injury I said he was decent which he was. Fans were chanting his name, everyone had him in their 11s for the start of the season under Silva (think I even did a thread on who would be top scorer and he garnered a fair share of the vote). We all knew he had no pace but he’d shown very decent finishing in those games for us. It’s a bit like saying Jelavic was rubbish, it’s so easy to retrospectively mock players but that wasn’t the mood at the time when he was playing ok.

There’s been far far worse strikers at Goodison than Tosun.

A lot of this is just proving my point anyway, all the laughing at names like Bolasie Besic Kone etc. I’m not saying they were great players before their injuries but the historical view of them is now solely taken up with the awful players they became after their injuries. I’m not imagining Kone absolutely tearing us a new one in the cup, and how many times did Bolasie do both us and Liverpool for Palace? Besic getting motm awards under Martinez and Martinez being booed when he took Besic off?

How quickly people forget, far easier to just jump on some senseless mocking of players who have had careers ruined by injury. I even remember Gomes and Gueye in a midfield two holding their own against a Liverpool midfield three at Anfield at the height of Klopp’s pressing team. Gomes now wouldn’t even see the ball in a game like that.

Injuries ruin players and they’ve ruined far too many at Everton. Oviedo went from people calling for him to replace Baines to barely playing for us again. It’s a curse.

We never get just a 2-3 week lay off.

Just knee ligament ruptures amd broken bones

Those crucible ligament injuries really snookered him

Ligaments, broken bones, ruptured muscles are the worst injuries. I’m not sure players ever come back properly from them. Some can come back to a good level but very few ever come back as good as they were. 09 season a prime example, Jags Arteta Yakubu Anichebe all injured. They all came back eventually and all played at a decent level but none were ever as good again. Arteta especially lost that half yard of snappy pace that made him so dangerous. He used to be able to play out wide for us an just run at full backs he had such balance, he could run a game from the wing. After the injury he just sat deep playing side to side for us and then for Arsenal.

Anichebe was always terrible

If he was any good we wouldn’t have loaned him to Crystal Palace mate. He is and always has been utter bilge.

I don't think he was ever good enough. He had injuries but even before that, he wasn't great.
And under Marco Silva, he lost his place to DCL before DCL's rise and that says a lot about Tosun (negatively). Would he have done a better job than Rondon? Probably equally bad or worse. Tosun probably could be a decent No. 9 in other leagues but not in EPL. A certain profile is needed to be a good No. 9 in EPL and Tosun doesn't have those qualities.

Another luxury player we wasted cash on. If it was Moshiri bought him, then it's his cash but he shouldn't be making decisions on player transfers.
