McCarthy and Besic i think would be the ones there. If martinez went for a real "animal" i wonder who he would go for.

Dont see many Gattuso or Jeremies types these days....they all seem a bit fancy.

Perhaps Ledson? We do seem to have a few DMs now.

didn't vote; what we need is a nasty barsteward who can play...or maybe two

got to be nastier* and play better than McCarthy...we haven't seen too much of Besic tbh.

* Not nastier in a kopite way, hard but fair. Collins, Kay etc

sad to say we need a none kopite Souness

@Jamo Martinez i think Cleverley (and Kone) are only being used on the left because Martinez hasnt brought in who he wants yet. So i think Cleverley will be an option in CM from next season.

@mkrudden agree about Besic. I think hes solely a DM and not box to box. Also agree that for the DM position he will be competing with McCarthy. This will leave the CM and AM positions open with Barkley/Cleverley to choose from really (based on my opening post). So we will lack one player at least. What type do you think Martinez will go for?

@granter79 also, if Barkley is moved back we lose his goals. The new player may not adjust to the league straight away, or if a traditional number 10 would be more of a provider i think. I think he would be perfect for us running games and driving from deep but the goals and the defensive side are two key points.

I think that's what Martinez seems to have with Barry. He doesnt look much but hes got a nasty side to him which is more from his experience i think which again Martinez keeps going on about. If and when he does leave due to retirement or needs to be brought in for selected games perhaps Martinez will go for another experienced head there.

Me being me, i would think he would see in another 12months that the 4 "potential superstars" we have are mature enough not to rely on a Barry type. I would hope he would go for another potential star in the making before Barry retires and have him learning from him.

I cant think of anyone who would fit the mould you describe at an age which Martinez seems to be building his squad up from. I suppose Youri Tielemans has experience in all three positions we have in the centre and isnt afraid of a strong challenge.

Seems these days theres alot of "soft" or only ball playing midfielders coming through as well as defensive midfielders rather than the box to box types.

Barkley would be ideal if he had more defensive nous but we would lose his goals. Martinez played to Lukaku's weaknesses last season and now hes improved, however doing this by playing Barkley in the centre could be much riskier.

2 or 3 years? On the continent they gave their playmakers the number 10 shirt since the beginning of time.

See Zidane / Baggio /Hagi / Laudrup.

What is a "traditional No. 10"?

Being as this silly expression has only been around for two or three years, it ain't a very long "tradition".

:p

....I think it's a really difficult call. I look at the fantastic mid-80s team and we had 2 ball winning midfielders who hunted in a pair. The creativity largely came from both flanks with 2 traditional forwards. I often think that is a really good model but it all depends on the players. Not many teams go with the luxury of 2 forwards now.
I always thought the 85-86 team played in the model you suggest there. More of a rigid 4-4-2 with it must be said, the perfect players to implement it. Whereas the 84-85 and to a lesser extent 86-87 teams were more total football teams where you'd see the ball winning midfielder or the centre forward crossing from the wing with the wide, creative midfielder, central defender or full back popping up in the area to score.

Not only the continent....we had "no. 10" shirts here as well.

They were called inside lefts.....schemers......or a more accurate description than "no.10" because the "no.8" provided a similar role on the right hand side, the "playmaker".

But this silly expression "no. 10"?

It only entered the lexicon a few years ago.

And I am willing to bet a sporting quid it was someone like Glenn Hoddke coined the phrase......because it is pure Hoddlespeak.

Zatara is the only poster on my ignore list, not because of the content of his posts, but his mangling of quote etiquette.
Same, but damned if you do damned if you don't.
He posts loads and starts threads so it STILL reads weird going through it.

Ive liked a few of @Prevenger17 posts recently as well...whoops!

Anyway, whenever i discussed football with europeans they've used the term "number 10" to be their star player / playmaker.

Just simpler than using another term these days i suppose.

Anyway, i think a deep lying playmaker would take us to another level...great link between defence and attack rather than Barry/McCarthy and also allow the wide players to hug the touchline giving Barkley and Lukaku more space.

Also would be interesting to see how Barkley develops in the attacking position as hes knocking in alot of goals...

And what is your problem with that, my good man
