Dave, what would you rather have - £5.3m a year from Chang, or £6m a year from Wonga?

Forget the figures, who would you rather we had on our shirts - a alcoholic beverage company, or a payday loans company? Or a casino. Or a betting company.

Are you trying to suggest the third leading premature cause of death worldwide which is responsible for 2.5 million deaths per year somehow has a moral high-ground over predatory loans or gambling?

1. We have more history.
2. This season is the first in the top 4 for a few years.
We don't have "more history" than Liverpool in the ways that matter in these situations and anyone that thinks we do is deluded. Until 2 years ago they were the most successful team in British history having won the biggest European trophy 5 times. Their global fanbase is probably 5-10 times larger than ours (based on various figures you can find). That is what matters to companies wanting to sponsor football teams. That is why United are getting are getting £353m over the next 7 years from Chevrolet and £600m over 10 from Nike.

Teams like United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and increasingly Man City have huge global fan bases. Then Spurs probably have a pretty good one. All the rest is basically down to domestic fan base which we are on a par with Newcastle and Villa. The deal with Chang is about what we should expect.

Oh, and Newcastle are getting a bit more than us but that includes stadium naming rights which Wonga used to put it back to St James' Park again as a PR move.

I would love to know the details on these potential bonuses.

For all we know it could be an extra £100k if we win the league which would be worthless or it could be an extra million if we make Europe which would be nice to know about.

Given the choice of Loan shark or Lager, I'll take Lager thanks all the same

Yes but shockingly your personal preference doesn't actually change any of the underlying facts. Alcohol is an utter monstrosity to society. You can't ban it and I drink it myself so I'm not some straight-edge crusader ... but that doesn't mean I have to bury my head in the sand and pretend it doesn't destroy people's lives.

Booze, pay-day loans and gambling all live in the same area of town -- just because we LIKE booze more than the other two and it's "cooler" doesn't change the amount of damage it does to people.

20 quid a week interest on a 200 quid loan is an utter travesty and should be banned ... but it probably doesn't kill 2.5 million people a year like.

There is a huge gulf from 6th best to the top 5....so any grumblings make no sense. In Spain, Valencia have been 3rd best for much of the past decade, but you wouldn't hear a Valencia fan complain they should be making money comparable to the top 2 who are light years away. The drop off in earnings from the top clubs is massive, as it is in every country. There is an elite group (used to be called G14), and they are operating in a different league.

Man U, Liv, Arse, Chels, Man C (with Arabs gazillions), and Spurs. They are global brands, exception being Spurs but for whatever reason have always been fashionable and are in London (and have Jewish backing).

We are in a working class area, overshadowed by our neighbours, and our brand is local. To expect the commercial department to work wonders is not being realistic.

The gulf between us and the top is growing. It's basically this I find depressing.

I hate saying Everton are not a big club anymore. I hate seeing are best players being sold to rivals. Then you see a 3 year deal signed which is for no more than teams fighting relegation are getting.

Who has said we should get what Man U gets? Who are you arguing with? We are saying we are a better bet for brand exposure than the likes of Sunderland and Fulham. The top teams are irrelevant to our argument so stop talking about them.

A more pertinent question is would a Valencia fan complain if their deal was the same as teams in 10th? I bet they would.

Good point there totally worth bringing up.

While Newcastle and Fulham have the same deals *now* they had better deals in the recent past. So they have gotten more money than we have. More in the past & same now = more.

So Newcastle and Villa have "worked wonders." Why can't our guys do at least that well?

Their teams have done better financially from sponsorship over the course of those years than our team.

Yes their deals just shrank ... but they shrank to the same level ours just increased to!

Alcohol has been around as long as civilisation, it's part of most peoples lives, the fact that some people have issues with it, won't alter it's use by the majority of the population.

The very recent internet glamorisation of the dark art of loan sharking, is quite another thing all together, as it's exploiting the people in our society who are among the most vulnerable.

Are people legitimately claiming this is a good deal because Sunderland and Newcastle are making this much now rather than what they were making?

3 years isn't terrible, but we should be talking 8-10 million a season. We need to sell ourselves as a big club, regardless of reality, we need to talk big and act big, and eventually people will just accept it...I'm pretty sure this is what Spurs did, because they've won f all and are now spoken of as a big club.

Deals like this make it seem like we're just happy to be here.

So an extra 1.3mil per year, less than Newcastle but a bit more than sunderland villa and fulham
Still, its the longest running deal in the prem, which the club seem to think is something to be proud about which has no impact on bobby transfer windows.

Good post. The last recorded shirt sponsorship deal I can find(2012) was for 2 million euros and 6 months only from a Chinese Energy Company. In the recent past Valencia have been sponored by a local Valencia furniture store....a bit like Everton being sponsored by a local garden centre !! Valencias main sponsors do not pay them anything comparable with £5/6 million.....and as you say Barca and Real are light years ahead of them. I think that Everton are getting just about what the current standing has a right to expect...a new stadium and success in Europe and the Premier League would make a difference.
