If you tweaked a couple of things and tidied it up I think it would be pretty good.
I think the general effect of the switch is a good one. It makes the content of a post more immediate whilst also managing to make the avatars more prominent too.

Why I'm not sure, is it's almost natural to read as your scrolling down, with the authors name catching your eye without effort before the content of the author.
But we're routine animals. An this layout is common and actually preferred on most forum software - lets give it a couple of days.

HA. Is it just my outdated browser causing this?
It fits on my screen at 1080p but leaves the log on indicator below his name...column width issue. It's another thing I don't like about it, the avatar column is eating up posting space. It wouldn't be an issue if the layout autofit your screen size but it never has. ** I understand why that is, BTW...just saying **

The niggling issues regarding width/avatar size would be ironed out with relative ease if the concept of "user info to left of post" goes ahead.
