Firstly, I am more shocked at Fox news doing a positive news story on Drag Queen story time

This visibility you are referring to in the 70's & 80's usually paints drag artists as the comic relief or butt of the joke. Granted, drag by its very nature is theatrical, but being depicted as the jester all the time doesn't necessarily equate to honest representation.
Think of the gay characters/actors in the same time period like Kenneth Williams in the Carry On films or John Inman (Are you being served)
Yes they did a LOT for trailblazing for openly gay actors, but their characters were often if not always stereotypical.

Also, for the millionth time, drag (Or transvestism) are not the same as being transgender. Not all drag queens/transvestites are transgender.
