Prices in London (which are similar to central Glasgow tbh) make me feel like that should be a pint of solid fecking gold really...

Think that applies to every city you are in centre tbh mate, however if you know your pubs, you can get a cracking pint / drink relatively cheaply which ever city you are in. The trendy places have to make their money at the weekend so that's why they kick the arse out of the prices Plus most of them have got a short shelf life before the hipsters move on to the next big thing, so they have to make their money quickly.

I know, but not because I go for drinks - I used to work in one lol

There are decently priced pubs around, has to be said, but you have to actually LOOK for them, plus even the one I was at had Estrella at a price of an arm and a leg, but several other and very decent beers (better than Estrella for me) at £3-3.50 a pint, which is still expensive, but alright.

What I'd look for mate is pubs that sell beers that are made local - Deuchars for instance ( Edinburgh ), the ale will be cheaper as there's less cost involved with transport etc so they can sell the beer cheaper.

However if you're drinking imported lager your knackered, it's always gonna be top dollar !

We had a local beer and whiskey (black bottle!) which meant we have cheap drinks.

People still went for Estrella for some reason though. It's pish as well.

Obviously never tried rakia.

@admirschleck
There's only one thing I tried that comes close to rakia in terms of absolutely killing you and that's Absinth (70%). Other than that, rakia is love, rakia is life, especially a home-made one.
