Made the mistake of scrolling through Twitter during my lunch break.

Apparently the most pressing concern in the UK today is the changing of clocks. There appears to be a vocal support base for NOT moving back to GMT as winter approaches, on the basis that the current approach makes evenings too dark. Twitter being Twitter, there's some fairly angry ranting on the subject.

My position is thus: moving the clocks back in Autumn is sensible, because it delays the onset of dark mornings as long as possible. Who on Earth wants to get up at 6:30am and go to work in pitch darkness? In fact, I don't see the need for moving the clocks forward in Spring - it achieves nothing of substance and whilst I don't know about anyone else it certainly messes my body clock up for three or four days.

I say stick to GMT. Don't move the clocks forward any more. What does the collective wisdom of GOT think?

I got an extra hour in bed with ya ma

I worked with a lad who turned up for work and hour early, after the clocks had gone forward. We were all ripping him for not realising that the clocks had changed. The following day he turned up 2 hours early as he put his back rather than forward.

Last I heard he was running an engineering team abroad on a 6 figure salary, honestly one of the thickest lads I’ve ever met.

Never been a fan of it getting dark after 4. But there is only so much light in the day during a British winter, so not much we can do.
This.
Winter equals GMT.

Like wise Summer equals BST...nobody needs it to be broard daylight at 4am.

It's a bit of a mither, but stick with the current method

Why has nobody ever suggested moving the morning an hour back to maximise sunlight in the mornings, and the afternoon an hour forward to maximise light in the evenings. That way there is no messing about, and everybody is happy. Could keep it that way for the whole year as well.
Have a 26 hour day and still only work 7.5 hours per day, your gaining 14 hours of 'you' time so the whole country will be happier.

I'm all for staying on EST/GMT as I agree that dark mornings are horrid.

I'm guessing this is a morning person vs non-morning person thing.

I hate mornings anyway. If it's still dark, it's not even freaking "morning" so why am I having to get up?!?!?
Add in that it's all toasty warm under the covers and the room is chilly/freezing...just koff!
As someone who has a hard time sleeping through the sun coming up, I personally like it being dark for longer in the morning.

That said, setting the clocks back so the sun comes up an hour earlier in the winter makes a lot of practical sense in modern times. Having kids leave for school in the pitch black dark for nearly half the school year probably isn’t ideal from a safety perspective. The kids in my neighborhood who ride the bus have to walk down to the main road to catch it every morning, and I’m very careful to watch out for them if I’m leaving between 6:30 and 7:00. Same, but to a lesser extent, goes even for people just commuting to work every morning.
