Ok, but what if clubs, somewhat legitimately want to utilise the players they've signed and have under contract?

A rule change is only unavoidable if you don't do the obvious thing, and void a season that cannot be completed within a given timeframe.

Legally why is it easier? It's just the logical position. If you can't finish something it becomes invalidated. Football runs on seasons. It's both explicitly and implicitly factored into the DNA and rules of the competition. When you start messing about with them, you have to justify each decision to a court, and with each change you make you open up a whole set of new questions that become hard to answer.

If your answer under cross examination was- the season couldn't be completed so it was needed to be repeated in full to move forward I can't see how anyone could really have any legal challenge to that.

This is what happened in the 5 nations in the 70's. This is what happened in WW2 here, or in Iraq in 2003. It's what happens in any race with a fault start. It's what will happen in European leagues. It's not perfect, but it's the best of a bad set of solutions and the easiest to defend, as you don't have to start delving into the minutea of contracts.

I think we’re on very different pages here if you believe that voiding a season is “the obvious thing”, “the logical position” or even the most ethical and fair solution.

Respect your opinion, just don’t agree with it. Good talk.

I don't think it's necessary the fair or ethical position (thats a much more difficult debate). I suppose it is the most legally practical as it's the most simple solution and easiest to defend in a court, which is ultimately what this will come down to.

Unfortunately, when there are hundreds of millions at stake, principles and ethics will have little part to play in the solution. Football is a very neo-liberalised game now and people will look after their own interests first.

Read Keiran's first post and the second line of his second.

What is contradictory about those posts?

I state my opinion that it’s never going to happen.

I then say, respectfully, that nobody can truly know what will happen anyway.

I’m not bored but I have other hobbies/interests.

Yeah I'm just getting used to Saturdays with no football. Got lot of things I want to watch, books I want to read, and hopefully will get the guitars back out for the first time in ages.

People will naturally miss football at times but it's an absolute irrelevance.
