Following on from the “products you won’t compromise on” thread where a few people said coffee.

I’ve recently switched from Dolce Gusto pods to filter coffee. I know the pods are recyclable but I still feel I’m being slightly more environmentally friendly switching. However, I do miss my Ristretto pods which were delightful.

Any of our forum gourmet’s recommendations for nice filter coffee? I’m a month in and have tried a couple from Lidl and just bought one from Sainsbury’s, still a bit underwhelmed.

I used to love a proper good espresso. Used to have a double one from my Gaggia classic machine every morning. But maybe I've got old cos that gets me wired off my tits now. I can only tolerate nescafe these days

Back in the latter half of the 1980s, when people were starting to become interested in coffee that was better than that afforded by the mass market giants, I became particular and not a little snobbish about the coffee I drank, which was the sort of sentiment that grew and grew among the larger populace until a company like Starbucks could arise and convince the world that a cup of coffee should cost far more than anyone had previously thought to spend. Eventually the concerns of cost and class war caused me to retreat from the boutique brands. Now my standard is cheapo brand Cafe Bustelo. Now I drink three cups in the morning without worrying about whether it'll keep me from paying the mortgage. Thank you, Cafe Bustelo, for helping teach me to accept the modesty of my estate.

Also, pods are handy but they result in an enormous amount of waste material and aren't as recyclable as the producers claim. We use a Keuring-style device for our coffee but we have reusable meshed pods that we fill with loose coffee and then rinse out afterwards. Put your nose to the wind and smell my virtuousness.

coffee beans lose a lot of flavour 3 months after roasting, and its even quicker once they are ground - so supermarket isn't always great apart from if you like really dark roasts. filter is better with lighter roasts

It all depends how much you want to spend, but something like https://www.pactcoffee.com/ would be a start. Or a good local coffee shop

Ever used one of these? Unreal with decent ground coffee!!

I got a second hand Delonghi espresso machine after I was bought a random coffee grinder by the wife. Now I don't bother buying coffees when I am out and about as it is much cheaper to do it at home. Not really sure about best coffee to use though as my taste buds are not that refined! I also need a lot of practice in the presentation stakes!

Get yourself one of these and an electric grinder - you wont look back
