No one can say that he’s a below average centre back in a back 4 though, it’s an assumption because he’s mostly played in a back 5 at Wolves. Same way people assumed that Tarkowski couldn’t play in anything other than a low block flat back 4 and wasn’t good on the ball because he was at Burnley.
It's not just because of that though. I've just explained that he has deficiencies which would be more exposed in a 4, and it's fairly well documented that his coaches at Wolves (in 2 different set ups) and Southgate have all felt that he wouldn't do particularly well in a 4. Again, that doesn't mean he'd be an absolute joke there and look like he's got his laces tied together like some people seem to think is being suggested, just that he isn't really seen as being suited to the role. It's perfectly normal for players to suit one system and not another, I'm not sure what it is that people find so difficult to accept about this particular case.

It literally is just because of that. Slow centre backs have played in back 4’s their entire careers, Terry and Vidic were slow on the turn and were two of the best around. Southgate plays a back 5 with 8 defensive players on the pitch regardless of who the personnel are so that’s not really the best example to use. Personally I’ve never seen Coady play in a back 4 but I’d never seen Tarkowski play in a back 3 either and yet I had everyone on here telling me he’s crap if he’s not camped on the edge of his own penalty area hoofing it away

I'm not sure how you can tell me how i've formed my opinion but OK.

I was talking about the general consensus rather than you specifically.
Well i'm sure there are some people who are just parroting what they've heard other people say yes, but the point is that there is sound reasoning behind the idea that he may struggle to impress in a 4, it hasn't just been plucked out of nowhere. In the other thread a Wolves fan has just posted about his weaknesses being exactly the same as I said earlier. He struggles both against pace and against physicality, it's fairly obvious that this is more of an issue in a 4 than it is in a 5, where you can be the spare man all the time and use your positioning and awareness to good effect.

….interesting he says his son trains at FF, unless his family lives up here whilst he’s in Wolverhampton or the lad is from a previous relationship, that’s a long way to travel.

I feel like people have got a bit confused with the 'can't play in a 4' stuff. I mean obviously he can play in a 4, he's not physically incapable of it or anything, it's just the feeling is generally that whereas he's an above average centre half in a 5 he's a below average one in a 4. He won't spontaneously combust if we put him there, but if we intend on playing a back 4 every week then he probably isn't going to be a very good signing.

He's not very quick (and quite slow on the turn) and he also struggles against very physical strikers. In a 4 that's a problem but in a 5 he just sits deep as a sweeper and mops up, never really needing to see his weaknesses exposed. If we get the set up right then his organisation and passing ability can be very useful for us.

It's more down to specialist in a position rather than he can't play in another that people seem to not grasp.

Until we bed in the 2 new midfielders and get a striker in, I think Lamps will want to play in a 3.

It's a balance in an unbalanced squad. Defensively we now look very solid and adaptable.

I read stuff on social media saying he lived in Widnes, but no idea if it's true. He sounds happy to be at the club, so that's a good start for me.

Its a 3 hour journey daily.

No wonder his wife is so happy to have him move nearer to home.

Get your drill out Conor lad, the wife has a list of jobs.
