Contracts -- an opportunity

I would release all of those players whose contract expires this summer. Including Coleman and Doucoure. That list is probably in the region of £600k a week, £30 million a year. Plus the inevitable departures of Onana and Pickford is another £10 million a year saved on wages plus transfer fees.
I agree with @Zatara . Those out of contract players would not be missed. We need to move on from soft sentimentality of doing something like giving Coleman another year ‘because he’s been a good servant, he gets the club.’ Move on. It’s the only way we can salvage our finances and build with younger players who haven’t been burdened with the years of mediocrity and failure. Mills, Garner, Patterson, Cannon, Simms. Branthwaite should be told he’ll be playing every week and we’ll allow him a move in 12 months if we’re not in the PL. I’m don’t want to see the same wasters out on the pitch next year that have got us into this mess, like Keane, we need to start afresh.

We’ve been saying this since Martinez filled the squad with players like the fella we got from Celtic/Russia who came on the pitch in faded jeans. His name escapes me.

Edit - Aiden McGeady
I was at that game, Norwich I think it was, Barry got a cracker from outside the area. When McGeady came out at half time, it was a bit embarrassing lol Knew from the start he'd flop, the Scottish Messi apparently lol

Oh mate.

That light is a train coming straight for EFC.

I'm all for thinking positive but we have to face reality. This club's existence is not guaranteed, saving £50m or so is good but the facts are we have about £500m to find to survive.
Plus we lose 89 million in tv revenue straight away

If you look at the Burnley squad that just smashed the championship their defence included two 21 year olds and a 22 year old and the keeper is 24.

Stay up and we need to also build from a similar young platform in the 11 e.g Branthwaite(20), Patterson(21), Onana(21), Garner(22), McNeil(23).

Then perhaps players like Warrington(20), Mills(19) and Cannon(20) could take squad places.

Bring in experience of course to help the youngsters develop (and improve the here and now) but also continue to build these two groups.

Go down and in theory we lose Onana and perhaps Branthwaite...which would be a huge blow.

We'll need to get rid of Dyche if we're going to go along those lines

I'm genuinely horny looking at that 2024 list of losers, but there again we'll either add even more dross on long-term deals this summer, or hand out long contract extensions to the worst of our terrible set of players. It's one bad decision after another at Everton nowadays.

If relegated we will have to get rid of all those out of contract and sell those who want to leave whose contracts are still running. Maybe one or two exceptions but on fastly reduced wages. My biggest concern is we will be forced to sell for cheap too as other clubs and agents will know we can't afford to keep anyone. Grim times!

Whatever happens this season, the next two summers provide an opportunity to rebuild the squad and save a fortune in wages.

There are 19 players out of contract this, and next summer (listed at the bottom).

That would leave us with the following players contracted until 2025 and beyond:

GK: Pickford (2027), Tyrer (2025)
RB: Patterson (2027)
CB: Branthwaite (2025), Keane (2025),
CB: Tarkowski (2026), Holgate (2025)
LB: Mykolenko (2026), Godfrey (2025)
LW: McNeil (2027), Dobbin (2025)
CM: Onana (2027),
CM: Garner (2026)
RW: Mills (2025)
CF: DCL (2025)
CF Cannon (2025), Maupay (2025)

Clearly theres a few that need to be moved on but thats still 17 players on the books. To be retained or generate fees.

Meanwhile we'd perhaps clear £1mil a week (£52mil a year) in saved wages from those out of contract.

Our FFP should be vastly improved and with a handful of incomings/outgoings there could (and should) be a vast difference on the pitch.

Stay up and its a huge opportunity, go down and we organically slice our wage bill with assets still on the books to sell.

Glass not half full but potentially a light at the end of the tunnel.

2023 - 9 Players
Mina
Lonergan

Doucoure

2024 - 10 Players
Iwobi

Warrington

Bumping this now people are discussing transfer business in the summer.

19 players out of contract over the next 13 months.

we might actually be stuck with keane, maupay and holgate until 2025
SMFH @ this club

ffs zat swerve all this for now mate
Why? we should be prepared for either scenario, leaving things till the season ends and having no plan is what gets us into this mess all the time, it's 'kin amateur and it's no wonder we are a laughing stock and rightly so.

Get the right owner and board in who can improve our commercials and sponsorships then we need worry less about some of this.
We have to stay up.
