Contracts + Deadwood

We have 11 players who are far behind the rest of the squad in quality. This is perhaps unfair on Oviedo who will likely be given another season while Garbutt is on loan and Robles who will be kept as backup keeper.

Hibbert/Osman/Gibson/Pienaar and Kone will be out of contract in 12 months time.

Howard/Barry/McGeady/Naismith are each on 2year+ contracts.

Hibbert/Osman/Gibson/Barry would not need replacing as we have plenty of centre mids and several right backs coming through in the next 12 months.

Pienaar/McGeady would need to be replaced by at least 1 left midfielder/winger (Henen?) Kone/Naismith would need to be replaced by a forward and Howard by a keeper.

Is it fair to say we could 'get by' with 3 players in and 9 players out?

Is Martinez planning to keep them all until their contracts expire and gradually replace them over the next 3 seasons or will we see one or two out this summer so the outgoings are not all going to happen in 1 and 2 seasons time?

Its usually not a good move to move out a lot of players in one go and can cost a lot of money as any quality replacements are not cheap but surely Martinez must make this a priority?

Please stop, I can't take much more.

I've sat here puzzled by this thread for a while, and I think I've worked out why.

Zat, how can you be so sure how so many players are going to perform over the next year? How do you know all seven of those players (I'm omitting Hibbert and Pienaar) are all going to crash and burn this year? And how do you know the academy players will take a step forward?

I'm genuinely curious at this point. I wouldn't even put my name next to a prediction of Stones and Jagielka starting against Watford.

Alright everyone, log off, no point being on a forum to discuss Everton anymore. It's all irrelevant because we're not Martinez.
Step outside into the sunshine, there's a whole world out there just begging to be explored.

Kone / McGeady= Totally useless
Hibbert/Osman/Pienaar = last season
Gibson = Permanently injured
Naismith = Limited ability + has £ value.
Barry = We are overloaded in DM/CM
Howard = We need better.

I think we can safely assume the above based on their careers.

Osman will play a part, as will Pienaar if he can stay fit.
Hibbert is vaguely adequate cover and won't be breaking the bank.

We're likely to be stuck with Kone. If he does anything half decent look on it as a bonus.
McGeady might be sold if we buy Lennon and Mirallas stays.

If we sell Naismith then, funnily enough, the money we get for him is likely to only get someone who also has limitations, and we're short up front, so I don't think it makes any sense to sell him.

Barry will be useful over the next 12 months. If he wants to go after that, then fair enough, sell him to allow someone like Besic more game time.

Agree with you on Howard.

Basically, I pretty much disagree with you on what's deadwood. At most, we'll probably replace three or four of the aging players per season, which is pretty much a natural turnover.

9 players out in one window is a terrible idea, also most of those players would hardly fetch enough money to be adequately replaced. Like woolly said ideally there's a turnover of 3-4 a season
