Well... why not?

Steven Pienaar... Alan Donald... the Spring Bocks... and of course, the land of the legendary Nelson Mandela.

I'm pretty sure spitting image were wrong and you can meet nice ones. Although one I worked with was a miserable git.

Anyone ever been?

interesting country, especially with the apartheid history, Mandela and all that.

i went for the World Cup in 2010...full of happy shiny people! stayed at locals' place (black family), they had a live-in servant who slept in the shed and did the gardening...he got paid in food & shelter only. they told me they have him as he'd have nowhere to go otherwise, tho' he clearly didn't belong to the family as it were, was always sort of hanging around in the background doing odd jobs. bit of a culture shock.

also had a few days with white folk (ZA-afrikaans, aussies, NZ'ers) and they were quite dismissive of the local black folk...left a nasty taste. the state of the townships right in the middle of relatively modern cities is also quite something to behold....not seen anything like that in Europe.

did joburg & bloemfontein...watched the Germany 4-1 England at the stadium...amazing stuff...saw Lampard's ghost-goal over the line even from my high vantage point. the stadium was like 80% english, 15% german and a few africans filling in the rest. no aggro. everyone in sound spirits, even after the game. went to a few other games where the vuvuzela-drones were insane! deffo unique experience.

personally i had a memorable positive time, was only a few weeks, tho'...i hear Cape Town is the cultural highlight but didn't have time for it.

in the news you hear a lot of social strife about in south africa, tho' on the ground things don't seem as bad as all that.

Been to Cape Town twice when in the navy.

Hands down the best nights out in the world. What a place.

Best strip clubs in the world. Great food and great people.

We all got told not to go to long street as it’s off limits and abit dodgy. We had our boats doo there. Was amazing. Anything goes anytime of the day.

Things I’d do to go back and find that South African Hooker. What a woman.

When I went in 2006 it was crazy. I went back a few months before the World Cup started and done the trial game (SA u21s Vs Brazil u21s). As the World Cup was starting in a few months you could notice the change in the policing. Anyone begging or stealing in the tourist areas got proper dealt with. What I seen the police do was madness. Wanted to change the image with the world turning up I guess.

oh aye, i think my time there was deffo coloured by it being a World-Cup...haven't been outside of that, but did spend time with the locals. met one township bird who had the most beautiful smile, we just randomly caught each others' eye in a marketplace and ended up spending the whole day together, just walking around taking silly pictures. no catches, no money spent, just genuine spontaneous funtimes.

zooming waaaaay out now: current research indicates south-africa may be the location of the very earliest homo-sapiens...it may literally be the birthplace-of-mankind...pretty cool!

John. Claiming the birth of mankind is not a lot to boast about for any region. See your previous post about hookers for example.

Ran in to an ex-pat a handful of years ago...when I couldn't guess where he was from (kept egging me on to guess), he called himself a "white N*word". After he saw my reaction, he told me SA...one of the stranger run-ins I've had with the public.

I worked with a guy years ago in Fire-Rating for building sites who used to be a South African copper and was quite blase about shooting people.

We called working with him the ‘hot seat’.

Cape town is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. Chapman's peak is breathtaking. There's loads to see and do and I'd recommend it to everyone. I definitely wouldn't want to live there though. Too many problems.
