I was in Jo'burg for a work conference. We were picked up by minibus at the airport brought straight to the hotel complex and warned not to go outside. It was surrounded by fencing and armed security.

Oh and Mandela died the night before flying home.

So all I saw was the airport and the conference centre.

I believe the other main cities are safer but it is a long trip

Lekker. While in Malawi Kaap Stadt was the place to go for stocking up and pregnancy scans etc. Ok, J'burg would've been closer but it's J'burg. Flew once with a flat screen telly with in-build dvd-player in the luggage, they didn't steal it.

Western Cape was achingly beatiful and climbing the Table mountain was like going to Mordor. Seals at Hout Bay, great whites etc.

Back then it was still relatively ok if you didn't walk 30 metres from the hotel. One white junkie girl tried to extort money from me by claiming I harassed her but gave up when I told I had a vitness as my wife was all the time 2 yards away. 2007-2010. Got tickets to 2 2010 matches in Durban but the payment never got through, maybe b/c of the Finnish credit card being used in Lilongwe.

Since those days that country has been heading towards being even more African again. Viva ANC & Julius Malema!

Cape Town and the wine region and then onto a Safari.

Also looked at Zambia around Victoria falls.

Think I would do Zambia first for the better weather around August time.
South Luangwa in Zambia is proper. May I suggest you go from Lilongwe by car and get the proper experience.

Why would you spend thousands to go to a place where your advised not to leave the hotel without an armed guard, pointless isn't it.
