Exchanges ripping off their customers or going bankrupt on dodgy calls all over the place. That's not going to be great for consumer confidence and if the only way to secure your money and "protect it from the banks" is to store your keys or coins offline that's a bit of a technical barrier to entry for the average person isn't it.

Well that is kind of the whole point of crypto, middlemen exchanges are the antithesis of crypto.
Being sovereign over your own wealth is not for everyone but I am more than happy to take responsibility for my own money and store my keys safely offline.
I agree it is a barrier to entry for people who are not exactly tech literate. That being said it's not hard, you just write 12/24 words down on a piece of paper and store it somewhere safe, make multiple copies if necessary.
