If this red was not down to total incompetence by all officials, then all you have left is corruption. Take your pick.

The red is down to the guidelines given for serious foul play or endangering an opponent. It was not serious foul play but you may make an argument that the studs being up were endangering an opponent under the guidelines. However, anyone who has ever played the game knows full well that there was no deliberate attempt to do that. At worst it was a yellow, at best it was "play on". It's utterly bewildering.
