Pickford was really good from when we signed him through the end of 2018. Then he basically fell apart for all of 2019 and 2020 before coming back again and being decent somewhere around February or March. Townsend has been crap for way longer and frankly I never thought he was any good even going back to Spurs. I just think it is way different.

My problem ultimately is more with the philosophy though. If you want a player like Townsend for whatever weird reason that's fine go sign Dwight McNeil or something that way there's an off chance he's able to progress a little and be more than average to below average.

Dwight McNeil is Burnleys best player and valued higher than £35mil. He would need a 5 year contract on decent wages.

Andros Townsend is better on the right (as an average player) than Bernard and Iwobi.

I don't love the Gray thing but I think you can make a case for his last two years being decent in the limited time he played. Basically 3 goals 5 assists in about 1000 total league minutes. Does that continue if he plays consistently? Maybe not. But he's also a player who can get us up the field so that is worth having too.

I can construct an argument for Gray so at 1.5m whatever. I've got nothing for Andros.

his stats show some positives and considering we already have a striker with final product maybe he can fit right into the system. Townsend has far less positives but he has created plenty of chances in a rather defensive Palace team. I'm not excited but I'm not as underwhelmed as I was when i first read about them.

If were signing Demarai Gray then i think Gordon is going to want a loan move.

We definitely need another wide player...hopefully incoming transfer fees covers a good one.

1.7 million for Gray is good business. He’s rapid and carries the ball well, he’ll offer something to this squad without question. If the FFP situation improves enough in 12 months time to enable us to spend good money on top quality, then he’ll be sold at a handsome profit to Watford.
Whether you rate him or not, it’s just isn’t bad business.

After reflection , I can allow myself to get a little excited over Gray . He's still got pace and would be an interesting sub during the later stages of a match.
I just can't see the point of having another washed up player like Townsend when we have just released Bolasie .
Benitez is hardly endearing himself during his first month with this kind of signing especially as we have some tragic figures we need to get rid of first . This time next summer will we begging someone to take him of out hands . A similar song we have been singing since the P.E teacher left .
