2021/22 Demarai Gray

Poor again, he plays with his head down. I hope Mykolenko gave him a right rollicking after the match, the number of times he overlapped at pace when Gray either, didn't see him, or chose not to pass to him, was shocking.
It became apparent that all he wanted to do (could do) was come inside and dribble across the penalty area, which I suspect Leicester noticed too.

Gordon had a poor start too but at least he grew into the game, which is more than we can say for Gray.

After bursting on the scene with a spectacular goal at Goodison he's not kicked on and recent performances have been lacklustre.
I'd pick Dobbin before him.

What’s happened to this lad?

Does the club actually employ a psychologist/mental coach, because we really have a lot of players capable on their day, but constantly under achieving.

What‘s that Steve Peters Chimp fella doing these days?

I will always be thankful for Gray as he provided a real bright spark during an absolutely dreadful time to be an Everton fan under Benitez. I think people need to be more realistic with him, he was a £1.7m punt because he was the poster boy for talented but hugely inconsistent footballers who have completely lost their way in the game. His form at the start of the season was completely alien to anything he's ever produced in top flight football before, and he was never going to sustain it.

Gray is a hugely frustrating player, I don't think I've ever seen anyone run down as many blind alleys as he does. But that's his level, he's never been a top player and he never will be. He is a talented boy who on his day is capable of doing something very special. I have no problem with him being a squad player if we stay up, but if we are still relying on him starting games next season then you will know that we haven't nearly strengthened our squad to the level that is required.

He's becoming too predictable in his play.

Cuts inside all too often. He needs to focus on beating a man and whipping it in.
he was desperate to score yesterday, as you say, he came inside every time onto his right foot to try and get a shot off, quite a few times Myolenko went on the overlap and wasn't played in, that in itself would have helped gray as defenders wouldn't know which option he was going to choose that may have given him half a yard to compose his shot better

This is not a solution.

And sometimes link up play is about not passing the ball when they take the man away from you. Leicester covered the overlap well basically every time. Sure he can pass it anyway but who do you want beating a man one on one, Gray or Mykolenko?

Given he almost exclusively tried to cut inside, his ability to beat a man becomes irrelevant once he gets smothered out.

Another one coming back from injury getting written off
Honestly this is getting a bit weird. He missed about a week of training with a minor knock 2 months ago, he's not feeling his way back in after doing his ACL. He doesn't need to be written off but he's been poor for a good while now and seeing as his entire career has been pretty underwhelming it's not a huge surprise that people are starting to question if he's actually got what it takes in the long run.

Agree, most of his goals came in the first few games of the season and then he did his usual drift off form after that. That is Demarai Grays career summed up. It's plainly obvious to see that the lad has ability on the ball but he isn't really much of a team player, and he struggles to put any kind of form runs together. He strikes me as one of those kids who fell into football because they happened to be good at it rather than because they actually wanted to be a footballer.

He's a counter attacking player who lives off running onto through balls / playing off the defenders shoulder.

Playing Lampard's possession based system doesn't really suit him.

Another victim of our change in manager styles from one appointment to the next.
