This guy looked pretty terrific in the Euros, like possibly the stand out player for the Netherlands in the matches I've watched.

Agile, quick, bustling with intent going forward and not one to be easily passed defensively.

Wasn't the mood that we've no chance of signing him due to those performances?

Great start to our business if true.

Yeah he looked sensational... in a back five where he was basically allowed to be a winger.

My only reservations are that he looked defensively weak (his tracking for one particular goal was awful, think it was the game Netherlands went out in) and he won't get that licence in the Premier League, even in a back five.

But we're screaming out for pace so he's worth the gamble.

The only question that really needs to be answered about Dumfries is: "can he defend well?"

We have all seen how effective he is going forward. Great. But his primary role - by definition - is to defend. This is where he will be judged until Everton have enough technically superior players in the middle of the field to be primarily a proactive, ball-hogging attacking side.

My fear is that Evertonians are conditioned to look at their full-backs only through the prism of attack. Seamus Coleman was never a great defender - but he was, in his early days, eye-catching going forward. Leighton Baines is renowned for his overlapping attacking play, his free kicks, his cool penalty kicking ability, and his assists. He was a very ordinary defender. Similarly, Lucas Digne. Nobody raves about his tackling, positional play, or defensive excellence. It's all about what he does going forward.

This is all very laudable, but it really only makes sense in the context of an attacking, dominant side who has the ball so much that defending is really a function of possession. Until we transmogrify into that kind of side, there will always be questions about the effectiveness of attacking full backs when we need people who can actually defend.

Could be a great signing....could also b terrible.

Way our signigs work out, you never know.

Im cautious over it, 25 and never played outside of Holland. Lets not be expecting him to be world class.

Apprently him playing wing back is a very new thing for him. He has mainly played right back of a standard back 4 most his career, even right centre back now and again.

It entirely depends on the system. If we plan to play with 3 CB's then it's far less of an issue.

PSV have yet to receive an offer for Dumfries. He'll return to training with them on July 18th if no transfer has been made by then.
Doesn't necessarily mean that personal terms haven't already been agreed I guess. PSV have been saying for ages that they wouldn't block a sale either way so you'd imagine we wouldn't be in any mad rush to lodge an official bid.

Well we should be, we need to be moving on signings. Wonder if the FSW will reveal anything in his press conference today.
