First watched it a while ago and didn't like it. But watched it again and I think it's brilliant. Heart warning yet heart breaking at the same time. Also I think gervais acting in this is brilliant.

So this Derek is obviously a slow chap, maybe mental issues and I watched as his favourite dog is put down and he's crying. Hilarious.

Terrible programme.

When watched in context it is often profound. The dog dies after episodes where they arrange for him to be a zookeeper for the day, stick up for him when the Council question his presence in the home, he helps old folk see out their last days and comforts grieving friends and relatives and other strong, rarely aired issues.

The jokes around Kev's crude outlook on life are more than a bit cheap but there is much to enjoy.

The first series was miles better though......

I liked Gervais. Derek is, to me, a mockery of anyone mentally disabled. The non-specific addressing of Derek's "quirks" and off, simplistic outlook on life is a big insult to many, IMO.

Shame really, because the message, though cheesy, is a positive one. Method of delivery: terribly poor.

Thought that was just about the best episode yet. Everything that is good about the programme shown off to its best.....

If you don't see the genius in the writing of Derek you should take the plug off your telly and weave grass table mats instead.
