Discussion & help on depression & mental health related issues

The likes of Lineker and a whole host off other ex players chipped in to send him to a specialist rehab clinic a few years ago mate - I think it was the second time.

He didn’t last long before he fell off the wagon again and they refused to provide any further help until he was able to prove that he was capable of drying out.

He never has.

I’m surprised he’s lasted as long as he has tbh
He would benefit from longer term support. I know ex players mean well, but lashing money at him for rehab is only ever a short term solution.

Not sure if this is the best place, but gazza is not looking well... :(

As a former blue, is there anything the club is doing to support him?

Aside from someone holding his hand 24/7 for a long long time I can't see him ever recovering, I appreciate that's not particularly positive but I can't see it ending any other way than him passing away in the next couple of years. I'm surprised it hasn't happened already.

It’s one, big, vicious media circle. He shows up somewhere in a state, everyone pretends to be concerned and lashes a few quid at getting him in rehab, he does a heartfelt interview about his problems and then the cycle begins again.

He needs someone to help him in the longer term and he needs to be out of the public eye. Blurts like that posting on social media under the auspices of getting him help are doing the exact opposite of helping.

Such a crying shame seeing him like that. I like to believe when he's not in the papers it's because he's doing well but something like this pops up and makes you feel sad.

Honestly no idea what the solution is for him now, I never say there isn't one because no one should be totally given up on permanently.

I agree that his celebrity mates lashing a few quid together to get him rehab isnt the answer even if they mean well. Someone needs take the time to get to the very core of his problem, the root of what causes his drinking and drug-taking. Once they find that its about getting him to realise that and come to terms with things and how to carry one his life without carrying those stones around.

I hope one day somehow he's able to win his fight for good. If we get the news flash one day that it's finally beaten him then that would be truly heartbreaking.

Hopefully there's someone out there willing to try and do that.

One of my best mates is an alcoholic. Thankfully, showing promising signs of recovery lately but especially over the last 3 years he had seemingly decided to set himself on a course of self-destruction. After my third “concern for welfare” call to the police over that period when he intermittently wasn’t answering his phone or door, his family and friends paid for him to go to a top rehab clinic in London. He wasn’t interested but we practically frog marched him into it. After he was discharged apparently detoxed, he rang me and drunkenly slurring narrated to me how he had cleverly sneaked and hid vodka bottles into his room on days he knew the particular testing personnel were easily manipulated....

Moral of the story is you rarely achieve success putting someone through rehab. They have to put themselves through rehab if there’s going to be a solid foundation for eventual recovery. Don’t think poor Gazza is in that place yet or will ever be.

Correct, it's something you need to do for yourself and the will to change.

I understand that but at what point do you stop?

Gazza has to want to be sober. He has to want to help himself. If he doesn’t, no amount of money will help him (short of locking him up!)

Very sad to see and although it doesn’t make pleasant viewing, i’m convinced it was the right thing to share it.

I’ve always felt if you can’t set a good example to others, you should be a good warning.

So Liverpool winning the CL triggered a huge crying fit this morning, but also, you know I mentioned that I took an overdose last week after getting into a nasty argument with one of Space? I just found out HIS SON MESSAGED MY MUM ON FACEBOOK asking her not to blame or mention his father. Wtf. How did the kid even know who my mum is? And my mum wouldn't do that.

The new meds are taking time to kick in and it's so frustrating. I've started on 37.5mg Venlafaxine plus half a tablet of Sertraline.

I am legit amazed he's still alive. I'm not being facetious. He's going to end up like Best one of these days. That picture of Best in hospital before he died haunts me.

Mum went through it twice and was still drinking. Her 'my G-d, what have I done?' moment came 2 years ago when my brother went to visit her and, upon meeting my stepdad at the station and finding out Mum had gone on a bender, got the next train back home. He was so angry he didn't want to see her. That, I think, was what made her kick the habit.

On an Everton-related note, can anyone explain to me how, as someone who can't even go the match, I'm magically able to control the team and make them rubbish by not being angry all the time? I mean, should I show the players my scars and say 'you did this'?
...there's two sides to the equation though: the other side is a support base that's allowed it to unfold.

No way the fanbase of Arsenal, United, Liverpool, Spurs etc would sit back and take the pummelling we have. Not without hitting back and getting some shift in fortune.

Our fans have been all too comfortable basically sitting in a comfort zone just so long as a relegation season doesn't unfold. THAT is the truth of the matter. Our horizons shrank after the 1990s relegation scrapes. We have for too long allowed mediocrity to prevail when our peers would have had none of it.

No, I don’t think that’s his point. It’s more that collectively, as fans we’ve perhaps been more tolerant of a ‘’meh’ season. Or rather, not been visual or vocal enough about any discontentment. It’s not about individual displays of grief. I’d say we’re very good at whinging and booing but we shrug our shoulders and go back next week, there’s little organisation of us standing together as one to say “this isn’t good enough” and i’d probably agree there hasn’t been enough of that.

United, Liverpool, Arsenal, even Chelsea have all had dips in the last few years and their fans have organised marches against the owners / managers, campaigned on social media, held banners before, during and after the game anywhere there was a media crew and generally stomped their feet and made a lot of noise to anyone that would listen.

Some may say that’s them being “entitled” and perhaps that’s true, but there is a case that had we been more vocal about midtable and bottom half finishes much earlier, perhaps we wouldn’t have suffered for quite as long. We’d have certainly seen change much faster.

I honestly don't know what I can do. And it scares me that I have some kind of power over the team, collectively or not. Because part of my delusions was that I could control Everton somehow.

I'm glad I don't want to stab Silva. At least I'm past that and I don't feel like that about Bob anymore - I've softened towards him a bit. He had good intentions.

Neither you, nor I, nor anyone else as individuals can >do< anything really. You have no power whatsoever and at the same time, your support when combined with thousands of others in the stadium is really important. Football is a team sport and we all play our part. There’s never been a game of Football played anywhere won by one player.

The key is to find areas in your life where >you< can make a big difference on your own, and in all honesty it’s not too difficult. An act of random kindness to a stranger in need. Asking how someone’s day is going and really listening. The real joy in life comes out of making others happy, I really believe that.
