Discussion & help on depression & mental health related issues

Did not care about anything only gambling. Put it before family, friends, relationships, work. Lost a lot of them mentioned because of it . Lied , stole etc..

Pretty much what my brother went through until we stepped in. His monthly wage was gone within 24-48 hours of being paid, stole from his mrs to keep funding it and then from work, it made him a nervous wreck.

Fortunately the shock of some of the stories he heard at GA each week coupled with us taking control of his money sorted him out and it's been about the same amount of time as you. Completely turned his life around thankfully and glad to see him happy and content now.

Well in for dealing with it mate and sticking at it, talking to him makes me realise how difficult it is.

Cheers mate. For me I had enough and wanted to stop.. no one forced me or was not really doing it for anyone else bar myself. I saw a lot at meetings who were only there because they were made go and most did not stick with it .
It's hard but it gets easier . But for people struggling with it now its so hard because its every where.
Main reason I stopped was because I had started to go online and had no break.
Before it was betting shops or race meetings and at least when they closed I had a break. But online meant I had none and that is what made me quit.

Yeah online roulette was his downfall and thats what escalated it to crazy amounts of money and eventually led to his mrs finding out the extent of the problem.

It's absolutely everywhere like you say mate and it's massively impressive to have made the decision yourself to sort it out, should be very proud of yourself.

Gambling is a a funny one really, I know it can absolutely ruin people in the long run.

I just to be really, really bad on the FOBT machines. I have unbelievable wins and unbelievable losses too, over all I’m pretty tens of thousands down.

I still like a football bet and a little game of poker, but I find that completely different. A £20 bet on the football to me seems huge, whereas a £20 spin on the routlette felt like pennies to me.

The last 5 months or so of the new government legislation has helped me and thousands of others. £2 max spin is fantastic, and I must say it’s amazing to see lots of high street Bookies closing down (not for those who are out of work obviously) but it’s positive that these places are being limited to those who have gambling problems.

Shops are using the FOBT stake reductions as an excuse to close shops down which is costing jobs and driving gambling online where it is hidden more and less regulations.. They can afford to keep shops open if they wanted to but it's about less overheads etc.. and they don't care about staff losing jobs. I gambled for 15 years and have now stopped completely for nearly 5 years. I hit rock bottom and nearly ended it all.. but Iv'e put all that behind me now and in a much better place.. The advertising needs banning. It's too ingrained in culture and Football is completely riddled with it. I worry about the advertising getting in kids heads the most.

Any difference to ale advertising? Compared to bookies? Or junk food?

If your a addict your a addict arent you, its not the adverts that make you bet imo its just your self isnt it

Nah mate. Not having that. Nobody wakes up one day and goes ''Yeah I'm gonna spend all my money in bookies''. They are designed to take as much as they can. I'm pretty sure the unlimited slot machines have only recently been regulated?

Yer i know but my point is, maccies is everywhere you look but junk food addiction is bad etc etc, its not JUST gambeling is it, you can be addicted to anything

A mean think how many people are addicted to reccy drugs and thats even without advertising ( obviously)

If you want a bet you dont need a advert to encrouage you imo

I think its the exploitation that worries me the most, we're not ok with the tobacco and cocaine being advertised on footy shirts, but alcohol and betting is sound. Its the demonising of the 'okay' addictions that annoys me.

Anyone else have nightmares/terrible dreams on a constant basis? It’s getting to a point where I dread going to sleep and I honestly can’t remember the last time I didn’t have one.

Are you badly stressed / anxious during the day - work / family / money etc ?

Stress / anxiety can often manifest itself through insomnia / nightmares.

Aerobic exercise in the evening can help release a lot of it and leads to a better sleep.

I know that’s not always possible for a lot of people with work, family etc, if not have a look online at “ sleep proofing “ your room - having no electrical items on, blackout blinds etc.
